So I may be having a slight career change and will be needing some reliable transport for a while. If all goes to plan I will be able to purchase a pretty much brand new bike so am thinking of a new street triple (maybe an R)...

But...

I am on a 33bhp restricted license until next June. I almost certainly won't have the time and if I do I really will have better things to do than re-doing my tests again. So does anyone have any experience of what a street triple is like restricted? and how do they stand up to the daily commute? I will be likely to use it daily unless it snows heavily.

I've also considered the MT-09, although apparantly there's a waiting list already and I'll need the bike fairly quick if I get the go-ahead. Are there any other bikes that measure up to the triumph, as from what I've read in the press it seems to be in a class of one, although I have only read British magazines Smile

No idea about it being 33bhp.

A full power bike, steering lock isnt great but only tightest London streets were an issue. Fuel consumption is pretty poor, and it gets extremely hot under your bum (though most modern/underseat exhaust bikes are like this).

Apart from that a pretty good commuter from my experience.

I see two people near me communting on them all year round all weathers so presume theyre practical enough, not sure how fuel efficient they are but guessing that might not be a huge issue if youre splashing out on a new bike Dance!

I had my 636 zx6 restricted to 33bhp for 2 years never had any issues or felt choked off at any point. If youve never ridden anything big unrestricted it should feel plenty fast enough id imagine Thumbs Up

I have a 2009 Street Triple R that I use to commute sometimes from Reading to Farnborough. It's perfectly fine for it. It's not fantastic on the motorway, but I only go 1 short junction down the M4 and then it's A B and C roads all the way. It's great fun, it's grunty for a middleweight, it has a mad top end rush and it handles very well. I still get a problem with a slightly warm backside despite having the Arrow 'lowboy' exhaust on there, I suspect the engine and the regulator rectifier pump out a load of heat in that area.

Mine says it does about 46mpg, and I'd say that was about right. It's not great economy but it's still nearly twice as good as my car does.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I have a 2010 Triple which is used to commute, albeit a fairly short trip.
MPG and poor steering lock will soon become irrelevant when you experience the handling and grunt of these things.
Not sure about the motorway comment unless you're referring to the lack of wind protection.
I'd be perfectly ok with commuting on an ER6 or an XJ though tbh but weekends wouldn't quite be the same.

Make sure you are on UK units in the top left.

Some people are getting up to 60mpg; I assume riding like a granny or with a remap.

Not got anything to contribute other than to say I really want one of these but won't go and test ride one in case it puts me off the 6R...

Street Triple makes a perfect commuter, though I am unable to comment on the impact of restriction.

One thing worth considering is the 'nickability'. My Street Triple R was taken in broad daylight from a parking bay bang in the middle of a busy part of SW1Y. Disk lock did not deter them.

Cheers guys, exactly the sort of encouragement I'm after so far.

I'm currently riding an Aprilia Pegaso 650 that's restricted, which seems to handle the restriction fairly well as a single it has plenty of low down grunt. As for all the posts regarding fuel economy, thanks, but I'm not at all bothered that, it's likely to be better than the 33-35 ish I get from the peg anyway Smile

A rather massive issue I've realised after popping into the local Yamaha dealer to enquire about the MT-09 is that I really can not test ride one before purchase. Dealers don't seem to want to restrict bikes for test rides... don't suppose any one has a restricted street triple in the midlands that they'd let me ride round the block Laughing

Cool, anything more than spraying it with acf50 or similar and the occasional wash?

Yeah you will have issues with that. You might find someone who will let you ride their full power example...I've met about 1 biker that actually cared about their 33bhp restriction Laughing

Also there is something wrong with your Aprilia: https://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/aprilia/pegaso

I really wouldn't worry about the restriction at all - As sam said, i've never known anyone thats had a restricted 600 moan about them beyond the obvious little 'cant wait to be unrestricted' etc sort of comments but theres not because they're performing badly - just they want to experience a full bike as i'm sure you do anyway Razz

But as with my ZX6 - there is plenty of power there with a 33bhp, i would of considered leaving mine on longer to be honest if it had for example made insurance cheaper or something of the like - the power really isn't that bad unless you're obsessed chasing tiny 0-60 times or something, even then though you'll be quicker than 99 percent of cars by a long shot i'd of thought Laughing

Super big clean in April or May, including going over it with Super Resin Polish and then waxing. Maintained with Autoglym shampoo when I get round to it. I might wax it again this month, apart from that, that's it.

How is that legal if it only restricts the handlebar grip?

Surely the bike is still putting out 100ish BHP?

Of course it isn't if you can't open the throttle enough to allow the engine to make its full power. Rolling Eyes

What's the ergonomics like on the street triple? Wouldn't mind something a bit more comfortable than a full on sports bike next time.

(Compared to say a GSXR)

I'm 6'3" and find it comfortable.
Anyone who's sat on my bike has said they like the leg position and the fact that they were leaning forward a little but not too much.
There are no issues for me at all although I do have to have a little leg stretch now and again but then, who doesn't?

I commute into London down the A40 everyday on a 2013 Street Triple (restricted to 33bhp). It's an excellent machine, the mirrors fold in easily so you can squeeze through small gaps, it still has plenty of power and it's an agile little thing. Very easy and fun bike to do anything on. The seat is a bit crap for longer journeys, but other than that I have very few complaints.

I had the restrictor fitted by Triumph. It's 100 quid if you get it fitted by them, but if you buy and fit it yourself it's about 35 quid.

I care about my restriction, being caught riding otherwise in accordance would be a full on life changer for me, I'd probably lose pretty much everything.

Also my Pegaso is four years older than any of those listed on that site.
