Got a call from my lad.
He was riding along and the spring on the side stand (Varadero XL125V) decided it didn't like where it was and went off exploring the road.

My reaction was along the lines of WTF, how do you manage to destroy your bikes? The motorcycles Noah took on his ark still have their sidestand springs Shocked It's not a component I've seen fail*

So, any reason why it should fail and the easiest way to replace?

I'm interested in the failure as want to check it can't re-occur. FWIW his sidestand has always been a bit on the straight side so care is required when leaving the bike.

As always, thanks in anticipation Thumbs Up

* this is where BCF proves me wrong as it's a common occurrence and I should get out more Wink

Any part can suffer mechanical wear or sudden random failure. Just be thankful its the stand spring rather than the conrod.

However, by robbylogic it's prolly the battery, so check the reg/rec.

They are low down and get covered in road crap, if not cleaned they will rust and snap.

Which is why I tend to cover bits like this in oil. Not your namby pamby WD-40 spray oil either. We're talking proper oil out of an oiler can. I'm sure it's the sort of item that's covered in the history books and museums for the younger members of the forum (see clicky link in last sentence). Which is probably why my lad is a stranger to using it Very Happy

This is why the ACU say that stands must be wired up in competition.

For competition machines I'd always assumed they'd be removed.

Also any tips on putting this type of spring back on would be helpful. Ta Thumbs Up

Competition bikes have no stands but there are RWYB classes in Sprint and Hillclimb and the rules state wireing up.

To put it back on you need a lot of 1p coins. Hold the spring in a vice and with a friend helping bend the spring to open it and slot the coins between the coils, then bend it the otherway and do the same. Fit spring and pull coins out with pliers.
Do not do what I did last week and try and use mole grips to fit the spring because you are too lazy to do it properly. This will result in a bump on the head and blood in the eye from headbutting the kickstart when the grips slip.

spring came off my husky stand while riding when i hit a large pothole. so to stretch the spring around I just used a

The sidestand bolt on my Buell failed, leaving the sidestand, the spring and the spring stop in the street. As I then could not leave the bike I had to get an old man to pick it up for me.

Mysteriously the replacement bolt was of a different design to the one originally installed on my bike... Thinking

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I lost one off the centre stand on my GPZ once - the actual stand bar that it hooks on had rusted away Shocked Bastard scary when it happened, the stand made a hell of a racket being dragged down the road!

Where's the 'classic' rating when you need it??

(Don't you just hate it when you rate a post and then see that it's ancient! Rolling Eyes )

It's baffling when you go to rate a post (that turns out to be ancient) only to find you've already rated it but don't recall ever reading it before.

Or worse, when you read a resurrected thread and find one of your own posts that you don't even recognise.
