Personally i'd go for
Cyclone V2 alarm 20-40 quid [plenty better alarms but more money, and argueably little extra benefit i'd say, its mainly as a deterant if fiddled with]
Almax chain over 100 quid but worth it, most others are as useful as a piece of thread around the wheel.
Alarmed disc lock - 40 quid [avoid the cheap cheap ones as they get set off 24/7 by the wind and anything else that moves within a mile radius]
And chain it TO something - a chain around the wheel is no good if it can be dragged into a van by two blokes in a matter of seconds
There is a range of GPS tracking stuff available too, but perhaps a bit over the top for a bike that isn't top of the range, i don't bother with it on my bikes personally. |

Any chain could be cut with a grinder / bolt cutters though. So can the £100 be justified? Although I use one, I doubt it'd do much against bolt cutters.
Saw someone with a battery operated grinder and a pair of pliers cutting off a DVLA wheel clamp... Cut through it in two seconds, he used his body to cover up what he was doing, but the sparks were obvious. |

So i would of thought unless its a top of the range brand new bike in question, a lot of thieves wouldn't be bothered whipping the angle grinders out to try get through it.
Plus depending where it is parked thats an awful lot of noise and attention to risk drawing, probably further deter many would-be-thieves.
I wouldn't even bother with cheap shit like oxford chains though personally, maybe to stop teenagers wheeling it off, but otherwise useless really. |
I live in a rough area in Leicester, and have a trials bike to make my bike even more sought after. And around here, bolt cutters are the thieves favourite tools.
Never park my bike around here though, always go in the more "posh" places in Leicester.

Bolt cutters are thieves primary tools these days.
And you can get a cheap pair for under £30.
The noise will put people off, but most of the public don't really care about alarms they just get ignored. |

I have my bike in my shed chained to a anchor in garage floor, disc lock (audible one) and another chain on the back wheel also connected to chassy. Hopefully this will deter thieves. My worst nightmare will be to wake up and bike is gone |

Just remembered, I used to live next door to a bloke who was a moto-x rider in his youth (probably 50 now) and then later part owned a bike spares company in Liverpool. He used to tell me that he'd take note of the bikes he spotted on his travels and their location. If ever a request came in for parts for a specific bike, he'd look down his list and tell the prospective customer that as luck would have it a crashed bike (same make/model of course) had just come into stock and they would be stripping it in a couple of days. He'd let the local thieves know what parts were required and hey presto! happy customer He was a right scammer. |
