Sediment in coolant tank?

Hello chaps!

I went to see a 2004 B2H ZX6-R Ninja today, reasonably cheap at £2000 BUT!

Coolant level was low and the expansion tank has a good 0.5cms of brown sediment settling at the bottom.

Looks like very very fine sand.

What do you guys think? I was thinking maybe where the coolant has evaporated its caused some dissolved minerals etc to precepitate out?

Or maybe a sign of something more sinister?

I seriously doubt it is casting sand..
1. sand would sink to the lowest point.
2. the Japanese die cast not sand cast.

Just shit in the bottom. Take off the drain plug, take off the radiator cap and stick a hose pipe in it. Turn the tap on and go down the pub for a few pints. The water wiil rinse it all out. I've been doing it for years.
It can even be done when ever you feel like it just to keep everything clean.
I have a mate who has his bike ticking over in gear whilst doing it, just so it gets up to temp and gives it a proper clean out.

Could very well be K-seal fella. K-seal is a brilliant temporary coolant loss fix if the leak is small. I have used it a good few times. The down side is that it leaves a deposit exactly like you are mentioning.

Thing is I would take it that it still has the issue if the sludge is there. If someone had temporary used it as is meant, then part of the sorting out would be a flush with clean water and fresh coolant.

I would reckon the leak is still there and being held by the K-seal. So would either leave it or negotiate massively on the price.

I had an old landy I was running into the ground and used 2 bottles of K-seal to get me another 15,000 miles out of the engine. Had exactly what you described.
