Just added another bit onto my business and thought id offer the service to the people of BCF as i have helped a few members on here.If the mods feel it is spam then i appologise and please remove it.Im just posting it on forums i use and Bookface.

A member off another forum asked me last year if i could sort his bike out for him,to which i said yes.. Well after some time the bike finally arrived at mine (via courier) with a long (very long) list of things that needed doing including an MOT.
So this is what i done to the bike:-

Rebuilt ohlins forks with new oil and seals
Rebuild front AP racing calipers
Check front wheel bearings
Re-grease headstock
Lube throttle assembly
Check controls
Add new fluid and bleed front calipers (customer supplied fluid)
Flush tank of old fuel
Sonic clean carbs
Fit new plugs (Customer supplied plugs)
Fit new air filter (Customer supplied filter)
Remove offending wire that was of no use now
Fit new battery (Customer supplied)
Fit new fuel filer (Customer Supplied)
New oil and filter (Customer supplied oil & filter)
Drain coolant, flush & refil (Customer supplied coolant)
Check wires around front of bike
Lube linkages
Clean & Lube chain
Clean rear shock (Spring needs new paint)
Start bike
Balance carbs with carbtune
Check everything over for M.O.T
M.o.t bike (Advisory on indicators flash to fast sometimes)(new relay needed)

The owner collected the bike today and is on his way home.
The cost for ALL of this work was just £349.00
*Just to add this was VASTLY cheaper than him taking it to a garage, but i can (and want) only to do 1 bike at a time.

The bike:-

Why do you need insurance to work on someone's bike?

Surely unless it's a minter worth thousands, having a few grand in the bank is 'insurance' enough?

If he is doing it as a business and informing the tax man, he'll want to cover his arse when the brakes fail causing owner to die.

No one works on my brakes... anything else is fair game though Laughing

I think it's more the quality of the work, or lack of it, being a direct cause to an accident, and the legal insurance needed to make sure you're covered for such mistakes.

Can you itemise that cost and tell us how long you spent on each bit? I'm intrigued how much you would charge for starting the bike and how long it took you. Do you travel, or will I have to have my bike shipped there for you to start it?

What needed doing for the MOT.

You say you took it to the MOT, do you have trade insurance, as far as I can see, mechanics don't appear to get other vehicle extensions.

What is your company name Wink Is it registered or are you about to get arse raped by BCF?

If you want to go with Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler there, go ahead and good luck to you.

But three months down the line when Mr One Bike At a Time has six bikes stacked in his council lockup, and five other owners nipping at his head on a daily basis, and you ask politely for the tenth time how your bike is coming along and he tells you to get fucked because he's not doing this for the fucking money you ungrateful fucking cunt and he doesn't need your fucking shit and you can come and fucking pick up all the fucking bits of your shitty fucking rustheap bike your fucking self from his fucking skip if you fucking want them, well, you get what you fucking pay for.

Why yes, I am speaking from experience, thanks for asking.

In OP's defence, he did my GS500 carbs for me when I knew nothing about mechanics. They were back in the post to me the day after he received them. Smile

After I changed the fuel hoses and some rubber went down them and stopped the float needle from seating properly Embarassed

Haven't a clue what they were like on the inside before hand, but they were fricken spotless when I opened them up afterwards.

Agreed. For cars, I'd recommend the "Kingway MOT centre" and tentatively "ECS" (Executive "Car" Services) for bikes in East Kilbride / Glasgow Southside.

But that's a customer recommendation, not the mechanics shilling themselves. I ass-u-me that the distinction is clear enough.

As above, liability is one. Then look at the bike in the pic - parked on the grass but do you see a puck under the sidestand? So the stand sinks into the ground, bike goes over, fairing smashed frame dented and who pays?

If you do work for money, you're running a business, and if you're doing that you should protect yourself and the customer with insurance.

Pete, I get the accident liability, but in terms of damage during care, well, bikes aren't that valuable. Presuming no-one gives him a Panigale.

Proving you have funds to cover damage is entirely sufficient. No need to pay out for insurance that may well never be used.

It seems like involving an external company with profit margins for no reason.

If you can't trust someone to pay up, you can't trust that their 'insurance' actually exists, or that they'd actually want to get them involved and claim anyway.

FFS leave the lad alone, he is doing decent work but maybe not paying a bit of tax.

Exactly this, it just seems like needless do-goodery.

Reminds me of Nazi-type posters. Dob your neighbour in, do a service for the nation.

Set up a lemonade stand outside your house? Hope you're HMRC registered. And have a food safety certificate. And liability insurance in case the sign falls on someone or your lemonade is somehow laced with arsenic.

Why people are so eager to crap all over small business is beyond me. If you're scared then don't bloody go there.

You don't need to read too many of the OP's posts to realise that he knows his way around a bike. In the current economic climate if he's prepared to trade his time and knowledge for an extra few quid in life then good luck to him. It's a shame that so few people in this country are prepared to get off their arses and give it a go.
As for the insurance issue, Pete's right. Public Liability is not mandatory for all businesses, but is a legal requirement if you are providing either a product or a service to the consumer. For this type of business venture I doubt that the premiums would amount to much so it's worth looking in to.

OP has done some forks for me after my dodgy bodgery attempt.

I had bought the parts to change the leaky fork seals, ended up conceding defeat and sent them to budgetboy.
Not only did he do the seals, bushes and changed the oil he went one step further and painted the forks for nothing.

I can't remember how much he charged, but I remember it was stupidly cheap! Edit he charged £40.

^^^^^^
Now if that's a typical example of the OP's work and the price he charges then fair play to him.

so thats £349 for labor (customer supplied most of the consumables), some oils, seals and £29 of it was for MOT. ouch glad i do mine myself, had never really realised how much i save, specially as this was cheaper than taking it to a garage.

also when you rebuilt the capliper was that with a complate set of duxt and oil seal for all 12 pots or was it just a strip clean and rebuild?
