PostPosted: 00:32 - 18 Aug 2013    Post subject: Drift HD 720. brand new and not charging. Reply with quote

Hello all, basically i bought a brand new drift HD 720. I put the battery in the camera and plugged it into my laptop via USB. 2 hours later i go to switch it on and it wont turn on. So i plug it back into laptop and turn the camera on and it works. I then unplug the cable and it knocks off again. Now it says in the manual (online) that when it is charging it shows a blue light. I then tried plugging the usb in the camera and as i was slowly putting it in the camera the light went blue, the thing is, it only flickered blue and trying to get it in a position where it stays blue is impossible! Now where is the problem? is it the actual camera or USB cable?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Smile as right now i am stressed out! sigh! Brick Wall Embarassed

I might have this wrong, but it seems there are three components here - not two. What I mean is, you ask whether it's the cable or the camera - but if I've read you right, the laptop is also in the "chain," correct? If so, it may be that the usb port itself is dodgy. Something like this has happened to me, at least.

So let me ask - do you regularly use that port with other leads, without encountering faults? If so, eliminate that possibility.

Secondly, is there any way to test that particular lead with another piece of hardware? Or is it specific to the camera? Probably the latter, knowing this kind of stuff. But if not, check it with something else if you haven't already - this way you can eliminate the lead.

If you can't test the lead in this way can you buy another easily and quickly? It'd be a quick way to suss out if the camera is being a bastard.

Try charging it from another computer.

Some devices refuse to charge unless they're getting enough mA at the right voltage. For example, my HTC Wildfire will quite happily charge from 500mA or a little less. My tablet wont even register that it's plugged in if I connect it to the same source.

Thanks for all replies Smile Thumbs Up

I have 3 usb ports on my laptop and have used my sister's laptop too and all ports are fine. The camera works when it is plugged into my laptop and will switch on but it just doesn't charge the battery. When it is plugged in i took the battery out and the camera was working by getting power from my laptop. Now i am not sure what is wrong, could it be faulty housing where the cable connects to the camera? when it is charging the light is meant to be blue but it only flickers when inserting it and instantly the light turns off again.

I have tried using my phone charger as i can plug the usb into it and it does the same, i place the end into the camera and it will flicker blue before not registering the fact it is fully in.

I was hoping for a solution because i can't be bothered with the faff of sending it back! looks like i wont have a choice. What an inconvenience!

To be fair, if it is the camera that's at fault, Action Cameras and Drift are both renowned for very good customer service so I'm sure they'll resolve the problem quickly for you.

In which case I would hesitate that either the camera or cable is at fault. Contact the customer service and inform them of your issue.

It's not ideal to have to get a replacement item, but it's better than having a non-working item Very Happy

Action cameras are very very good in terms of customer service.

The universal clip on my hd720 broke, i phoned them, they sent out two replacement clips which were here the next day, all covered under warranty.

Batteries are cheap enough, you can get one plus a 12v and 240v charge here for example under £10
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301212887910

I'd suspect some computer USB outlets will barely supply enough power to charge an ageing battery.

I have a really weird issue with my drift HD, I don't use tagging and the remote is disabled. I just turn it on and leave it recording when riding.
Since I got a new phone a few months ago (Moto G 3rd gen) every time I get a notification on my phone it stops the drift recording like it is sending the same signal as the camera remote.
I'm not sure if this is even possible? but it defiantly seems to be happening. I arrive at my destination and if I look and the green light is showing on the drift and it's stopped recording, I have notification on my phone.
Contacted Drift on twitter but they didn't reply.

USB charging did not work. Plugging it into the mains did not work.

What worked?

Taking the battery out and using a wall charger with the battery in it (and not in the camera) this worked.

Go to the menu and disable remote control functions.
