So I'm thinking about changing the exhaust on the new steed;

As you can see the existing can is quite some significant length, I'm thinking of going with GP style carbon colour can as they'res not much choice, I think itl go with the black on the bike anyway, agreed?

Lastly, what would u do about this paint wearing away from the exhausts where it meets the can, paint, polish??

A Scotchbrite pad and some Autosol will get the pipe looking nice, if it's a bit shite under the scabby black paint you could wet and dry it with some superfine paper then more autosol and buff like mad until it has the desired finish.

Or just mask it up and spray it with some black VHT paint Thumbs Up

Cracking bike - I love the bigger style bodywork. I wish modern bikes had something similar to this now.

I just added a cheapy stubby to my bike (zx6) to see what is sounded like as I thought the current aftermarket pipe was a bit too quiet. The stuby makes it sound exactly like I wanted it to. It really screams at high rpm.

Could just shorten down the can and polish the link pipe

Cut down the existing end can and either paint or polish link pipe, whole thing neatened up for what? About £10. Smile

Stubby it, they look, and sound a shitload better.

That can has absolutely no baffle in it, and f**k me it's loud, Mr. Green.

Right I'm thinking basically cutting down the existing can is the way to go, my only concern is how do u get the rivets out and re refit it? I take it u cut with by hand with a hacksaw or something? Worth re packing it whilst I'm there, I'd appreciate a decent tone on an exhaust but I don't want the drone on long journeys!!

Drill the old rivets out, go gradually up sizes until you clear the rivets so you don't just drill a bunch of whopping great 10mm holes in the exhaust. You will need to buy a hand riveter and some rivets to put it back together.

A hacksaw will cut the pipe, getting it straight will be the tricky part! Take your time, measure and check more than once!

Also this may sounds obvious, but if you aren't sure how short you want to go, err on the side of caution, you can always take more off afterwards.

Or find somebody with one of these:

Which will guarantee you a nice straight cut through.

Mild steel system on SRAD's is it not, changed to stainless on K2's.

Polishing it not a clever idea.

Sounds pretty simple, I'm fairly confident of being able to cut it down by hand as I cut flue pipes by hand at work pretty straight. I'm guessing I've got a tolerance the same depth as the rivet collar for error as the pipe sits inside there right?!

What about changing the wadding in the exhaust whilst I'm at it?

Also this may sound like a silly question but I take it I'm cutting off the bottom end of it right? So I keep the badge and everything!

I've just noticed u mentioning the headers being mild steel, in that case a protective paint coat would be the best option right?
