No Spark _ Flummoxed.

Hi All

Please forgive first post as a help request ..

I have a ratty Suzuki a100 I have been playing with for 'fun' but it's now driving me potty as I cannot get a spark. The summary of action is below..

Points check opening and closing (not worried about timing yet)

Condensor measures OK 200nF

Getting some AC volts of the source coil enough to make a small low tension spark on coil feed (difficult to measue off kickstart but maybe 6-9 VAC on DMM)

Charging coil measure about 0.9 Ohms but ignition source coil is 2.5 Ohms ( a problem ?)

Removed condensor no change.

Fittted new coil (primary 1.0 Ohm, secondary 6 KOhm)

Checked coil earthing - all seems good.

Tried sparking straight off HT lead - no change

Was thinking of swapping stator coils over next...

No specs for coil resistance in my manual as it covers older model
and mine is a later 79/80.

Anyone anything eles to suggest ?

Live to the points?
And I would clean the points, the may have a gap but if the contacts have gotten a bit oxidised wont help

Sorry yes I did clean points with sandpaper. NO 6v dc to the points as this is a basic AC system fed from magneto.

Have some juice coming from magneto but not sure it's enough..

:D try a new condenser............6v dc at points so ign works from battery rather than a flywheel mag..........?

OK, some more..

Tried an experiment this morning (before work..) - wired the coil direct to battery +6v and dabbed the negative to chassis/ground while holding the HT lead close to ground. Got the occasional 'weak as a kitten' spark.

On return home will double check all earth terminals etc.. Really expected this check to deliver a fat blue spark but..

Hmm, looking about I saw a test method for 6V coils written up on MopedArmy (well an a100 is really an overgrown moped right ?)

On there is says to use a 9v battery and disconnect the +ve ('not ground or it won't spark ') So some more to try tomorrow !

:D so it has points ( not a cdi system ) and a flywheel magneto ( non battery dependant )...........and makes no difference if the condenser ( capacitor ) is connected or not...............so, with no pics to "see"..........try a new condenser........ :D 8o) :karma:

it is possible to convert and utilise the points with a battery set up, if all else fails...........

are points v white and arc a lot??

tried a new condenser with oe set up yet?

pic would help as they are worth a thousand words.........

Aha ! After fannying about for hours I stuck a meter on the source coil output line to measure resistance of the coil/points to ground. Rotated engine and no change !

Thought I had cleaned points properly before, apparently not as they weren't shorting properly when closed. Situation could also have been help by the new coil..

Thanks all - was getting to thepoint of replacing stator coil..
