Having problems with missus fabia , fucking power steering shite failed MOT today

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Fabia-Octavia-Superb-VAG-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-diagnostic-tool-/221071868904

Anyone used one of these or something alike and are they any good?

Had all the scensors off the pump and the one on the steering rack , checked the fluid level , the PAS is working but stops every now and then when still so was gonna try one of these before i go replacing parts!

Those generic readers are never very good at reading codes from VAG cars.

Buy one of the Chinese copy VAG-COM leads and download VCDS Lite, you can do most things with it.

Yep, they are all the same so get the cheapest you can.

You will almost certainly have issues with drivers, if you do have any problems, give me a shout because I've probably come across them, and I have 4 different laptops running various versions at the moment, all of which took an effort to get working. Laughing

That ebay shit wont help you, as has been said vcds lite would read the power steering codes which can point you in the right direction.
The genuine vcds is only 285 anyway, so cheap for what is near dealer level diagnostics.

You can get full VCDS for $99 with a 3rd party lead.

https://www.ilexa.co.uk/acatalog/vagcom.html second one down we use, never had much luck with copys. You can easily make mistakes with vcds on certain models if you dont know what you are doing.

I would think you are going to need a pump by the sounds of it if the wiring checks out ok (big earth wire gives problems) I work at a Skoda specialist (ex dealer), the racks fill with water where the sensor fits and that knackers the sensor, or water wicks down the wiring into the pump unit and shorts the ecu out inside it.
get yourself one of these,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vag-Com-Vcds-11-11-1990-2013-Hex-Can-Usb-Latest-FULL-2013-/251330028878?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3a846fe54e
works a treat (we have 2 genuine vcds leads and one of these) and it should give a few pointers but internal errors are common on pre 2004 units.

All the connections seem fine also checked the one on the steering rack cant afford a brand new pump so going to have to try some scrappers!

I've got an Autel Maxiscan MS309 as a generic code reader and it is quite good as a basic device. Don't forget though that these generic basic OBD2 code readers only read present fault codes and generally if the engine management light isn't on or hasn't been on, there will be no code for it to read.

The boggo fault code readers are good for clearing codes which is often the biggest issue when cars play up because sometimes the cars just get all stubborn while a code is stored and won't work again until you get it cleared.

They read basic management codes but that's it, nothing brand or model specific and they don't do abs, airbags, steering etc.

The usb leads hardly work with any software, the vagcom ones are good but the opcom/vauxcom ones are a pain in the arse if you get the wrong type of lead.

Would I be best just to take it to a garage and tell them to clear the codes and then get a pump ?

Does the car have one of those city steering type buttons where you can turn power assistance up or down? could be a fault in that.

If it is powered by an electronic pump, check the wiring to it and check the fuse isn't blown (sometimes they just break and lose contact intermittently) had it with a Peugeot last year the steering would randomly shut off and we would have to get it cleared at Peugeot found out that was down to a dodgy fuse..
