I have my mondeo up for mot soon in 2 weeks and despite replacing the rear brake shoes in the drums and resetting the auto adjust, the handbrake still comes up too far and will fail (was an advisory)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2mm-3mm-4mm-5mm-Simplex-Wire-Rope-Grip-Cable-Clamp-316-A4-Marine-Stainless-/390641496919?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Sailing&var=&hash=item5af40c3357

Rather than new cables would the above work to put on the cable end stopper? Or is there a better idea? I don't want to go stripping the old cables off and fitting new if there is a quicker, and successful bodge job that can be done?

A local garage wouldn't charge to too much to fit a cable. £50 ???

sometimes the auto adjuster sticks but you can turn it with a screwdriver and set it manually it takes a bit of pratting cos thers a lip on the drum so it has to be tighter than you think and tap it on with a mallet if its not tight enough take it off an give it some more, hope this helps

From memory from underneath my Mondeo, it had a single cable between the handbrake leading to a twin pull bar and then two single cables back from there, one to each side.
Never did need to adjust them, but on some cars I've owned there was an adjuster to be found underneath the handbrake gaiter to take up the cable slack and to lower the bite point of the handbrake arm itself.

Yes the idea is too shorten that cable by putting a stopper further forward than where the original crimped on stopper is. Guess I will get the car on the ramp and have a look, cheers

Is there an adjuster at the handle end?

Usually the auto-adjusting part of the handbrake is down at the business end, where it adjusts a small amount to account for wear in the shoes and to keep both sides balanced if one is wearing more than the other. You then have a manual adjuster at the handle to adjust how far you have to pull it, and to cope with the cable stretching.

If you don't have an adjuster at the handle end, a really dirty bodge is to wrap a loop of cable around a bolt and clamp it down hard with a nut.

Thanks to all who helped, sorted the cable in the end by cutting off the nipple and soldering a nut on further up the cable Laughing
