I'm old enough to have lived through at least 4-5 cry wolf cycles (maybe more) of:

There aren't enough X Y Z workers.

There aren't enough plumbers

There aren't enough gas fitters

There aren't enough engineers

There aren't enough mechanics

There aren't enough teachers

We gotta train more of them. My cynical side always said that these shortages were just businesses saying.

We don't want to pay the going rate, train up employees and want fatter profits. Therefore get the government to pay and get people to take on a shed load of debt so we can suppress wages!

I never really had much evidence for this cynical kind of thinking. Other than the decline in the pay packets of all the jobs were there were shortages... Confused

Looks like I was was right*

https://spectrum.ieee.org/at-work/education/the-stem-crisis-is-a-myth

*or an article has come up which supports my confirmation bias

Plenty of Engineering job vacancies, trouble is they don't all offer wages in keeping with the skills and experience of the staff they seek.

As for the others you list, there's plenty of "labour force" type workers in the job centre and very few vacancies.

It took me a while to get my head around the concept of 'shortages' in economics.

As far as I can tell it's simply a redefinition of the term. If salaries are higher than an arbitrary benchmark (NMW as far as I can tell seems to be the favourite) then there's a 'shortage' of labourers.

The most hilarious part is that they actually seem to expect mathematicians of all folk to accept daft wages.

Having just gone through the process of seeking employment I can attest to this. Plenty of work out there but it's amazing how little some companies want to pay.
And the skill lists and experience some companies want would require a decade plus to attain in both academia and competency yet they want to pay peanuts. Would have been easier to blag Mandy down the road and get her up the duff. Could have been sitting pretty in my council mansion with more free time and no money worries Laughing

i have to agree with the daft money, i ahve spent the last 10 years of my life doing various types of cleaning, and atm they wont to pay minimum wage, expect us to do 2 hours work in an hour, and then expect the work to be top notch at the same time. i about to leave the industry due to the fact that they now seem to expect the impossible

The objective in service jobs is to keep the staff turnover very high-this keeps wages low.

Also, make sure you don't count all UK uni attendees as being in the market, they aren't. Many are just here to study. Case in point with Engineering...

But it’s only a sticking plaster on the wider issue that is getting worse. “Since the late 1990s the number of UK-born graduates studying mathematics and science degrees has fallen by almost 70%,” comments Brown. “This has lead to an increasing shortage in relevant skills and has put the UK's efforts to tackle growing cyber security risks on a backfoot.” The long-term solution can only be to encourage more bright youngsters to follow studies in mathematics and engineering; and then to persuade them to take careers in security.

I've topped out my earning potential. Agents keep throwing "senior" jobs at me that are offering 15K or 20K less than I'm on.

At the same time, my company is planning to pay a small fortune to move into city centre premises specifically in order to attract urbanite graduates, rather than simply offering them more money.

Business, eh?

I think that is the case for all industries.

At times i receive a phone a day asking me if I'd like a job. I am a CAD designer for mechanical and honestly, from what i gather there just isn't enough of us.

And you still haven't worked out how the agencies/headhunters work?

They spend all day on the phones - usually mornings to employers saying 'what jobs you got' and afternoons to employees saying 'you'll be perfect for this job'. That doesn't mean there are a lot of jobs, simply that there are a lot of phone calls about jobs.

Agent via LinkedIn: Hello, I have some amazing opportunities that would be ideal for you, please contact me.
Rogerborg: Go on then, dazzle me.
Agent: Please call me or send a CV so that I can match you to vacancies.
Rogerborg: [blocked]

Recruitment is like dynamite fishing, they just drop random depth charges and hope that something tasty floats to the surface.

I have in the past pulled my own CV off of a fax machine, sent by an agent who hadn't even spotted that the "current employer" at the top of it matched the company that they were sending it to. Doh!
