Took a gamble on a 30 euro reg/rec from a varadero and all is well with only two phases hooked up. 14.4 V and a nice 3A into the battery. Doesn't charge at idle but, apparently the tractor has always had the charge light on at idle which went off as soon as the revs went up. That's what my voltmeter says too so its all good in the hood!

I'm just a trifle concerned that it has a charge light.
Usually charging lights are found in charging systems with electromagnetic field coils, the charging light goes out when a relay is triggered by the field coils being powered up. These use a differernt type of regulator.
You're certain it's a permanant magnet type? There are definately no brushes or contacts inside the alternator?
If it is a permanant magnet type, I wonder what triggers the charging light? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

There is a little wire coming out of the original r/r up to the dash to operate the charge lamp. This tractor also has a battery electrolyte level light bless its Japanese heart. Needless to say neither are working with a the non-oem battery plus my r/r bodge.
100% certain the alternator is a PMA. Only two outputs leads which are both the same color. Neither lead has continuity with earth. About 10vac open circuit at idle rising to a max of 30vac at high revs. 0vdc at all times on the output.
