I'm currently in Portugal ( therefore no proper tools or parts) trying to fix a mini tractor that won't charge. Unlike most tractors with car style alternators, this one has a little permanent magnet alternator and a external regulator/rectifier unit just like a bike.

The alternator is giving a nice 30v AC, with piss all coming from the RR unit. Now a few km away on the Portuguese equivalent of Gumtree is a RR for a Yamaha xv250, which is a three phase unit ( 3 white wires in, and a red and black out). If I hook up the tractors single phase to two of the white wires on the xv250 RR, will it do its job and give me some nice power out?

Else would I have to ground one side of the alternator output and hook up the otherwise to a single input on the bike RR?

Took a gamble on a 30 euro reg/rec from a varadero and all is well with only two phases hooked up. 14.4 V and a nice 3A into the battery. Doesn't charge at idle but, apparently the tractor has always had the charge light on at idle which went off as soon as the revs went up. That's what my voltmeter says too so its all good in the hood!

I'm just a trifle concerned that it has a charge light.

Usually charging lights are found in charging systems with electromagnetic field coils, the charging light goes out when a relay is triggered by the field coils being powered up. These use a differernt type of regulator.

You're certain it's a permanant magnet type? There are definately no brushes or contacts inside the alternator?

If it is a permanant magnet type, I wonder what triggers the charging light?

Normally Closed relay, that operates at 14v? So light goes out when it's charging?

There is a little wire coming out of the original r/r up to the dash to operate the charge lamp. This tractor also has a battery electrolyte level light bless its Japanese heart. Needless to say neither are working with a the non-oem battery plus my r/r bodge.

100% certain the alternator is a PMA. Only two outputs leads which are both the same color. Neither lead has continuity with earth. About 10vac open circuit at idle rising to a max of 30vac at high revs. 0vdc at all times on the output.
