Hi guys, since summer is over Thumbs Down and it will now rain for months, can anyone recommend their favourite or just the best waterproof:
Jacket
Gloves
boots
trousers (overalls)

Thanks!

(nothing stupidly expensive please)

I use Tucano urbano muffs and summer gloves, keeps my hand warm and dry.

Not sure on other gear but those are the top item on my list every year now.

The problems not waterproofing its breathability, for breathability read comfort.
waterproof oversuits are fantastic at keeping you dry and cost buttons, however they are also a big plastic bag you sweat into.

The only bit of waterproof kit i've ever bought thats done a great job has been Daytona GTX boots, pricey but work, i've bought goretex jackets that have been worse than a 50 quid oversuit
Sad

Impossbru.

You will only end up with a compromise.
Cheap gear is cheap gear. It may be waterproof and only last a month or two, be impractical/difficult to live with/in when it is asked to do it's job. ie drenching rain and cold.

I use Hein Gerrike gear as a rule because it works. And is not too expensive for gear that lasts season after season. I have jackets since 2007 and still perfect. Hoi them in a washing machine with a dose of Nikwax Techwash every year to keep them sweet. Smile

I use a stupidly expensive Rukka jacket and trousers (which, as I predicted here, resulted in a hot and dry summer), but when wearing jeans/leather jacket, I use a Targa one-piece oversuit that has kept me dry during occasional showers. Something like this one. Cheap, but effective. I don't know how long it will last, though. The summer has been so dry I've only worn mine a handful of times and now I'm back into the Rukka.

My alpinestars MX-4 boots weren't stupidly expensive and have kept my toes dry for 18 months.

The Tucano urbano muffs would make me look like a huge bellend (No offense Paddy) but I may actually get some...

I'll look at the Hein Gerrike stuff but the Daytona GTX boots are a bit pricey. Im using £100 Sapada ST1 WP boots which were great, until I drove through a massive puddle while going around a round about... not fun, they are now soaked, but they are good just not with heavy rain.

Onesie FTW. Either just a cheap waterproof onesie to go over your existing gear, or a proper textile jobbie if anyone still makes an affordable one. I have an old Frank Thomas textile suit that does the job nicely in the wet, don't think they're still made though.

The only two pieces of waterproof gear that I own that I still like are my tucano urbano big furry muffs, and a pair of Alpinestars web goretex boots. The muffs (£50ish) are excellent, as are the boots (£110).

I have Weise textiles that are absolute shite and two pairs of "waterproof" Spada gloves that absorb varying levels of water, make my hands sweat even at subzero temperatures and take an age to dry.

Army Surplus is fine if you don't mind looking like Michael Ryan. Razz

The 'motorbike' gear does come with a bit of padding for rolling around on the road.

Army stuff is durable and 'can' be very cost effective. Thumbs Up

My RST "sinaqua" lined textiles lasted a couple of years before seeping and despite Nikwax re-proofing (wash in and spray on) are now gushing at the groin and elbows

I was putting some solvent free brickwork sealer on the house this weekend though, one thing led to another, and all my gear, gloves included, got a good dose of it. Bring it, nature.

However, for actual water / weather proof winter riding, I use army surplus goretex lined boots, army surplus rubbery trousers, and a hi vis padded / thermal / roadworks jacket with storm flaps, worn over the top of whatever protection layers (leather, kevlar jeans) I fancy wearing. Not glamorous, not expensive, but it actually works.

Oh, and muffs of course, DIY ghetto style.

These boots will do the job https://www.britishmilitarysurplus.co.uk/ishop/1069/shopscr383.html

Had a pair for 3 years now, got them second hand, been used for everything, only just starting to let a bit of water through, and only if I stupidly stop where I have to put my foot in a deep puddle.

We did a 220 mile there trip and a 220 mile back in the rain trip on Saturday & Sunday. It rained a lot, I stayed pretty damn dry, warm and comfortable.

Boots dun got dubbined up after someone mentioned putting dubbin on them on BCF a couple of weeks ago. Thumbs Up Feet then had sealskinz waterproof socks just in case my dubbin didan'ae work. Boots held up a lot better but still leaked a bit of water in, waterproof socks took care of that.

My Joe Rockett textiles had some nikiwax tackle applied to them and I this time remembered to put the additional 'waterproof' inserts back in. Embarassed I also had in a dry bag on the pillion seat a set of army surplus goretex over trousers and jacket. I put these on for the 220 miles back as it was bouncing it down.

By pulling the trousers up as far as I comfortably could and pulling the jacket down and trapping the back bit under my arse and the seat I managed to stay totally dry from my toes up to my wrists. Only my hands and throat got wet and cold. Thumbs Down

I can't lower myself to fit muffs to the bike, yet. So the quest for warm & waterproof hands continues. Everyone else got wet & cold feet, hands and groin. Laughing

Rst rain suit
50 quid
Get a size up from your gear, keeps everything dry, can use the same gear in summer [layers if its cold], no need to buy new winter/waterproof gear, and wraps up tiny in your backpack/luggage to carry for emergencies at any time Thumbs Up

I've got something similar, all in one over one-sie.

It's nicknamed my sweat tent as that's exactly what it is. I also use it on winters mornings for warmth where it does an awesome job. It's just a ballache to get it on and off.

Good for winter [when it TENDS to be raining at least], on the rainy summery days they're a bit toasty though Shifty

Oh yes, they do that. And smelly. Trouble is, washing them more than twice means they leak so you can be smelly and dry in the rain Laughing

My name is Pat and I like Muffs (The ones that push onto the bar-end can be put on and taken off in seconds)
https://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m174/howlingterror_2006/DSCF0604.jpg
Persevere with them and you'll get used to using the controls. Unless it's very cold you can use summer gloves with Muffs.
https://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m174/howlingterror_2006/DSCF1726.jpg

These boots aren't the cheapest but they are very comfy and waterproof (Do not fit the metal bits Embarassed ).
https://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m174/howlingterror_2006/IMG_0023.jpg

..and this £9 rainsuit from Aldi/Lidl is still waterproof after 4years. It has reflective piping. (I should've got a size smaller, also had to sew the heel straps back on)
https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/pic_027.jpg

If it's dry and very cold I wear a padded sleeveless jacket over my leathers. Underneath I'll have thin thermals and a windproof top. Windchill Exclamation

Thats a really good idea never thought of that, usually use a hoodie but it still requires a ton of additional layers as its not all that warm in itself.

And did you return them considering the guarantee on GoreTex is for the life of the garment?
