Talk to me.

Budget £100

I want something decent to learn with. I had a £25 one a while ago that I crashed and broke. It was crappy anyway and I want something that can run for more than 10 minutes on a charge and that I can get spares for if I break something on it.

I think you should increase your budget a little bit - this looks like a good buy?

The question is, do you have some indoor place to fly or do you want to fly outside?

I'd recommend a Ripmax Sabre. It's a decent branded chinese copy of a Hummingbird which is an expensive small 'leccy helicopter. You'll be lucky to get more than 8 mins out of a charge. You'll crash it (and probably destroy it) in that time anyway so it doesn't matter.

Alternatively an Esky Lama is a good bet, easy to fly, can be flown indoors, but very stable and comparatively boring. You won't crash it nearly as often or as badly as the Sabre through.

Must be electric due to hassle and noise of nitro.

It will be for outdoor use.

I don't mind short flight times so long as I can get a couple of extra batteries.

I can fly the basic ones reasonably but I have never attempted one with more than the basic controls.

Also, I don't mind spending more so long as if I can't fly it I can sell it on and make something back.

The last one looked almost exactly like that Esky Lama. It was very stable.

I am going to do some more research on these models.

Thanks Thumbs Up

What about the quad copter Glyn (N30) is selling on his facebook? don't think it's much more than £100.

The Esky LAMA V4, MarJay posted looks good, no tail rotor = less to damage. If they sell those blades and some engine parts separately, then it's perfect. IF it's heavy enough, I had a small rc chopper my self, once took it out, little breeze from the west and I had black hawk down, black hawk tree actually. Laughing

EDIT: it was a cheap, infrared controlled foam chopper, nothing special, was a gift and obviously not suited for the outside world.

I bought a budget one £30. Instantly mashed it into a chair leg first time it lifted off the carpet. Embarassed

I would look for £100+ though. Much better control if you buy top end kit.

I also had a small thing for £10 that disappeared (forever) over the neighbour's wall as soon as it got off the grass.
I read the destruction sheet later and that informed me it used Infra-red signals from the RC so sunlight, being full of IR, took over the controls. Sad

They do sell spares and they are reasonably heavy. I've seen them flown outdoors but obviously you wouldn't want to do it in high winds.

i know probably slightly out of budget, but when i was looking for something a little while ago i heard only positive stuff about the blade 120sr. you can find a Bind and Fly one on ebay for about 60-70, and then you need a transmitter, something like a dx6i (another 50-60) or maybe a dx5e for slightly less.

its more than £100 but will give you more options, as you can bind the transmitter to lots of different helis and planes if you get more into the hobby (want a bigger heli), or if you find you don't use it sell it on ebay for what you paid for.

an option to look at perhaps.

whatever you get, ensure there is spares backup for it.

Ripmax as a company have been around for a long time, although some of their range is seen by the company as disposable toys, others serious models.

E-flite's blade series were good sellers in the model shop I worked a few years ago, ALL the parts for it were available as spares to the extent you could build one from parts if you wished.

They come with training balls which are fitted to the landing gear and look like table tennis balls on the end of sticks, but they help prevent the copter toppling over on take off and landing.

I've got an Esky Big Lama, supposedly is large enough to fly outdoors.

Got mine for around £80 and bought another battery so can get around 16mins of flight together.

Great fun, works well outside (not in strong winds) and isn't too hard to learn on.

Did have a hard time learning to take off without it flopping over. Best way i found was to just gun it off the floor and then stabilise Laughing

I paid £50 for one that was 'allegedly' half price.... 50m it said on the box Rolling Eyes

When the wind died down enough to actually get off the ground (for a whole 4 minutes before needing a 3 hour charge Thumbs Up Neutral ), it got about 20feet in the air, lost its signal and came crashing down on a steel shed. It snapped the nose cone off it's mountings

This is spooky. This afternoon I ordered a RC helicopter. I then tuned in to BCF and saw this new thread...Spooky or what?
It's a Volitation 9053 and it cost me £50 including a spare set of blades and an extra battery. I picked it up this evening and am now familiarising myself with the controls.
It's a fairly big chopper I've got and I've not managed to get it up yet.
Tomorrow could be the big day...Wish me luck.

Not an easy piece but magnificent in its conception. The 1812 only works with real cannons and bells, The helicopter quartet only works with real helicopters Very Happy

I think I might go for the Esky Lama as it seems like a decent one.

It should be a good starter heli and if I like it enough, I want to go bigger in the future if I can.

Will see how it all goes. I did enjoy what little time I had with my last one.
