Hi, I was hoping that I might get some answers as to what may of caused the gearbox on my bike to drop a gear....I have a GSXR1000 K9. I have done 13000 miles on this 3 year old bike, but it has now dropped 6th gear :( has anyone else come across this problem !!! I would appreciate any feedback as to what may of caused this and is it a common fault.

13000 is nowt. Shocked

It may not be a catastrophic indecent and could possibly be a sticky lever/de-tent.

Can you get six when on the side stand?

Its a VERY uncommon problem but Honda actually have a name for it, its known as club foot syndrome.

Its caused by keeping your foot under the gear lever after shifting into top causing the shifter fork to wear against the 6th gear cog.

Easy repair, one shift fork and one gear.

If the advice had been any use I would of replied.. But you have no idea but to slag of my riding ability so it really wasn't worth commenting on....

Not slagging your riding ability, he told you the common cause of the issue. Now you can either fix it or use 5th as your highest gear, still good for 170mph Laughing

Regardless of the cause, it's either a fork, a gear (including the dogs) or the selector drum.

Unless a random bit of metl has come loose and got jammed in there, in which case you have even bigger problems.


You won't know until you strip it.

Years ago I was talking to a Honda UK mechanic about a grey import CB400 that had done this to top gear and how I couldn't work it out and he cracked up laughing. Said he had been involved with a bike that had excessive wear on the gear and selector fork so they rebuilt the box and it did it again. When the owner returned to the Power Rd workshop one of the mechanics saw him and saw his foot holding the gear lever up after he changed gear so they worked it out from there.
