Honda Demonstrates Advanced Vehicle-to-Pedestrian and Vehicle-to-Motorcycle Safety Technologies

'Vehicle-to-Motorcycle (V2M) Technology
Using the DSRC communication system, Honda's Vehicle-to-Motorcycle (V2M) technology can determine the potential for a collision between a motorcycle and an automobile. The V2M system's advantage is its ability to sense the presence of a motorcycle even when it is obstructed from the view of nearby automobile drivers. The system provides auditory and visual warnings to the automobile driver. This system is being researched and tested in cooperation with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.'

I wonder if Honda will accept liability when a car fitted with this technology hits a motorcycle....Hmmm. Still, it's a step in the right direction.

Interesting, but this a step in the wrong direction IMO

Better training for drivers and harsher punishments for not concentrating fully on the task at hand.

They'll be let off if the system doesn't flag a biker because "Even the system didn't see him, he must have been swerving and speeding like a looooooon"

^ this ^

Making things safer with technology is not the answer to evolution.

Safer option? force everyone to have at least 1 years experience on a 125cc... that will do it!

More people that ride bikes in general will make it safer. Problem at the moment is people don't assume that there'll be a bike coming up alongside them so they consequently assume that there won't be instead!

Totally agree, dumbing down of people by having technology do things for them is not the answer.

"Still in the experimental stage", and has been for years.

Given that such a system would have to shriek before the clot pulls out or wanders across lanes, it would be going off whenever it spotted a bike. So it would get de-activated in short order, because fakking bikers interrupting me while Shazza was telling me about this bloke what shagged her up the Gala.

Alternatively, make it too reactive and it would only serve as a "drop your phone on your lap, brace for impact, and turn on your wipers" warning.

Sounds like a little bit of an upgrade on the systems they use in the Dakar to let the bikers know when cars are coming. Except here it's the other way around.
