... Just got off the phone to him.

He says yesterday he was on the M4 in rain when he spotted a group of 5 bikes, all bmw/ktm adventure type bikes all under 2 years old underneath a bridge with the riders sitting on the armco. All of the riders were in full touring/adventure gear. Suspecting one of them had broken down he pulled in to see what was up.

Their excuse for being under the bridge?


They didn't want to get their new bikes/gear wet.

If it was pouring and I was concerned for my safety I would consider it sensible to shelter under a bridge for a while. There are times when enough is enough. Bollocking or not - better than being dead!

Pffft, I've turned around and gone home because the heavens have opened and the ride just wasn't going to be as pleasant as I thought it was, but to seek shelter under a motorway bridge!? Mental.

Yes yes obviously you would not shelter under a bridge in normal rain. My point was that sometimes (like torrential downpour) it is safer to break the rules and apply your own. As for a Panigale - with those Supercorsas they fit I doubt any amount of rain would be a good idea As for fair weather bikers well that's up to them. I try to ride every day but do avoid going out in the rain because I don't like cleaning for 2 hours after a 1 hour ride! When I had the Gixxer I went out less because it was easy to lose grip in the wet with the power. On the V-Strom I rode in practically all weathers. The guys mentioned above had adventure style bikes we're told - I doubt much would make me shelter on a BMW with dual sport tyres. Mind you the only wankers in my book are the ones who's skill is not as good as they think it is rather than the over cautious. Most of us are somewhere in between I would think.

You can get the sort of rain that makes it virtually impossible to see where you're going and kind of makes meaningful progress difficult - the sort of rain storms they had in Germany at the end of June were unlike any thing you get over here, with a rain soaked ignition and a spluttering bike I pulled over for 15 minutes into one of their rest areas and carried on after it dropped (and the bike was happy to run again following a dose of wd40...) The example given though seems a little on the ridiculous side! What's this fear of getting a bike wet all about?!

its gets to a point when you have to stop on the motorway when you cant read the dials on the bikes speedo etc because the rain on your visor glasses etc. If you cant keep to the speed limit and cant see other vehicles then its time to stop

Fine. Except it didn't get to that did it. Op's dibble said they were frit of damp, not pulled over cos they hadn't fitted periscopes. Big difference.

Anyway, so much for adventuring. I always suspected a lot of these beemer clowns were tossers - here's more evidence.

I've only taken shelter under a road bridge a handful of times, one memorable one was a rainstorm so heavy the rain came through the gaps around my visor and kept balling up on the inside making it impossible to see.
