Hello

I ordered one for the visor. Today it arrived. As usual I've rushed into it, not read the instructions and ballsed it up already.

I've damaged/removed some of that sticky stuff that goes around the edge. And when I fitted it and put it back on the helmet, it runs over the rubber seal so looks like I'll have to trim it.

Anyone else have that issue, and what sealant can i use for the sides??

The pinlock has a few indentations up the side so you can move it vertically about 1cm without needing any trimming. Just a case of playing around with the different fitting points till you get one that is clear of the rubber trim of the helmet.

What helmet do you have and what pinlock did you order?

You can get many different pinlocks to fit different helmet visors. As far as I am aware you shouldn't have to use any sealant, it literally just slots into the two pins on the helmet visor and that should be it.

Not that it'll work, but I'd try and bodge it with a very thin bead of clear silicone sealant applied to the insert to replace the bit you've wrecked, and left to cure for at least 24 hours before re-fitting to the visor.

It won't work, but it'll delay the point where you have to admit that you've knackered it. Wink

For what it's worth I thought the instructions were shit and very difficult to follow.

I ended up drilling 2 unnecessary holes in my visor which I filled with glue... but it was worth it in the end, pinlock works.

I'll try to buy my next helmet "pinlock ready" though.

Assuming it's a polycarbonate visor, the above statement is not true.

Well it wouldn't get a decent seal so i took it all off and it seems to be better Laughing

Looks like I'll buy another if it's completely crap rather than spend a few quid on sealent which might/not be any good

that may be scientific FACT that polycarb is resistant to mineral and organic acid but its not neutral!

My cheap Chinese watch is/was water resistant but unfortunately it does not work after I go for a swim with it on. Cost me £3-99 for a replacement. Embarassed

Working in an industry where both Silicon based sealant (RTV) and polycarb are used, I have been advised not to use both together as trapped solvent gas can damage polycarb.

I would not use anything other than mild cleaning soaps or approved cleaners on my visor.

That's because you took a water RESISTANT watch swimming, should have a water-proof if you want it to continue working after a dunk

Water resistant is more splash-proof and will survive being splashed when you wash your hands.

I'd think that the vinagerette holder (nice pic by the way) has a pv film of some kind on the internals, as the vinegar in the vinegarette would not only damage and stain the polycarb over time, it would also leach Bisphenol A into the foodstuff- not a very nice chemical! The same goes for fishtanks, that's why they are generally made out of acrylic or polycarb with a pv coating.

Ahh so it must be 'speshall' silicone Pin-Lock use on their inserts then?

It says a 'Silicone bead' in their blurbs.

No just normal moulded silicon- with a knife edge (dry) bead to form a seal against the visor. Standard moulded silicon is completely inert- unlike silicon sealant which contains chemicals to keep it liquid.

I don't think there is an argument.
It's simply a pedant banging on about a redundant issue.

FWIW. The Pinlock System is a Lens made of a plastic material which has been through several processes to do certain things.
1 A moisture absorbent coating on the 'visor' side.
2 A silicone rubber bead (which acts as the air-tight seal to prevent additional moisture getting between the lens and the visor.

Since the silcone is applied in the factory probably months before it gets to the end-user the silicone will 'probably' be as cured as it ever will be.

I have been using Pinlock since Christ knows prolly 2004-5 and never had a bead fail or damage a visor. In normal use a visor will only last about a year before the shit off the road ruins it.
Damaged visors are OK in dry weather but vision is greatly reduced in rain.

The trapped air having no/low moisture content will promote a clear condensation free view.

Important thing to think of are the method and materials used to clean the lens. Some 'lens cleaners' will destroy the moisture absorbency
