came out to my motorbike this morning and found that my bike cover had been removed (unclipped from underneath) and placed next to the bike.

I have no idea why anyone would have done this - other than to see if it was locked up - but surely they wouldn't ahve needed to remove the cover like that? just a quick peak underneath...???

It was locked up - (a big D-lock passing through the rear wheel/frame), plus the steering lock (although not sure how much use that is).

am i being paranoid? or would this be some sort of 'check' being done by some thieving bitch-tits and maybe they return another time with some beefy tools to break the lock off? not sure how strong the lock is (its a Trelock - bicycle D-Lock).

i have an oxford chain, but no padlock. im thinking i should probably have this added while its locked up outside my flat.

just a rather puzzling experience - and it definitley didnt blow off of the bike. its clipped in from underneath the bike (its an Oxford bike cover)....... no obvious attempt on the lock - no marks/chunks taken out of it...... Question Eh?

That shit is gonna go missing with an Oxford there. Grab an Almax and get it chained to something solid.

Also put the cover back on and join it at the bottom with a rape alarm.

any recommendations on the rape alarm and where to get one that doesnt involve it spending another night without a beefier setup?

also, i cant really afford another chain right now, so will have to make do with getting a padlock for the oxford chain i have right now and upgrade a bit later this month. any recommendations on size of chain links?

there isnt really anywhere i can anchor the bike too along my road - with the exception of a lampost - but its rarely accessible - parking along our road is of the last that doesnt need permits, so its always busy......i'd go effing spare if my bike gets nicked. god knows what i'd do if i spotted them in the process!

Oxford chains and bicycle locks are the equivalent of putting a note on your bike saying "Please do not steal".

If you think an Almax and ground anchor look expensive, compare them to the excess on your insurance and increased premiums for 5 years.

i understand that. but pretty sure i wont be getting hold of an almax before the end of today - unless there is an outlet or distributor down the south coast i could get to in my lunch break today...???

if i can at least get hold of one of those rape alarm thingys, i'll at least maybe hear the theiving scum as it'll be right outside my bedroom window....

As already said, get an Almax and chain to something unmoveable.

If you don't have the cash now, can you not borrow from family etc if you explain your bike has been checked out by theives?

Question

You live in Brighton, rape alarms are plentiful.

Basically, they have a pin that you pull out, usually a tag on each side.

You can tie these through 2 small holes and when they pull the cover off, it pulls the pin and WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH. 120db of cunting screeching Laughing

i'll call Almax. i may just reloacte to a garage for the mean time untill i can get my chain sorted. i guess im lucky it was only checked out.

they may have seen that its a CG and decided not to bother Razz.....perhaps the curiosity was too much for them with the cover on an all. i wonder how dissapointed they were....

Unclipped and placed carefully next to the bike? Even Le Petomaine wasn't that skilful with wind.

Mine used to get unclipped by the wind all the time, I'd find it up against a wall or next to the bike or anything else that would stop blowing in the direction the wind was blowing.

OP does live in a seaside town.

i would accept that, except for the fact it was a windless night (its been out in worse and never had this happen).
also, its a rucksack type clip (the one where you push it in either side to slide out) there's no way it would unclip in strong winds - it'd have to tear it off.

besides, its was crumpled into a ball next to the front wheel - dont think the wind is that considerate Wink

Damn man, I have the same bike as you, do people really steal shitty CG's?
I guess I assumed it just wasn't worth their time or hassle for such a cheap bike? Sad
Having said that, my cover was unclipped and crumpled next to my bike about 2 months ago, I did attribute it to the wind but now I'm starting to wonder...

Good luck anyways.

Not very bright are they? First thing I would do is put it back to normal so you didn't suspect a thing. Either wind or tinker, just secure it thoroughly if you want it to stay put.

I like paddys rape alarm idea, and you could consider those trip mines too.

If the cover's back on it the next day then it means someone is keeping an eye on it.

If the cover's still by the front wheel then no one is watching it and you've got more time to fart on nicking it

I used a chain, a D lock, 3 rape alarms, a cover and a disk lock and I was still worried about my bike!

Exactly. Last week my bike had its cover pulled up over the topbox. At least they're stupid.

The only good thing is imagining the conversation - 'anti-pinch pin, Almax 19mm chain.. let's try down Entertwainer's way, got your butterknife?'

Only joking, get the Almax and I'd recommend a pin so the chain 'loop' goes through the heart of the bike and not the wheel. I'm still overdrawn partly due to the chains I got, and I don't regret it.

Somewhat on topic, when securing the rear wheel to a ground anchor, are you better off with a padlock through the chain, or built in lock on chain?

I'm not so worried about them removing the rear wheel, as that is a cunt to do even with a breaker bar...

Chain through the frame. I can get my rear wheel off the TL in less than a minute.. a CG will take far less.

Old car blagger trick, they'll go down a street putting stones or pennies on tyres, then come back a few days later to see what's not been moved. Anything that hasn't is unlikely to be missed until it's on a truck and half way to Assfuckistan.

I heard a rumour ages ago that taxis et al get some cash for noting down certain bikes and letting the teeves know, maybe someone was shopping for a particular bike and yours wasn't it.
