Hi BCF.

Basically as some of you may know i'm planning to get a ktm 300 exc to do some enduros, green lanes etc but the thing is in the midlands although we have a few green lanes I don't think we have anywhere to just 'mess around' without causing trouble.

I heard there is a place called 'four marks' where you can pay £10 for the day then go off and have some fun without having to worry about getting in any ones way or spoling an event etc.

Thing is these places all seem to be around 150 or so miles away and as i'm 18 and even if I did have a car license, the insurance on a van would be ridiculous.

What are these competition style bikes like for the occasional long distance trip? I'm keeping a sports bike for the commute but obviously i'm a little stuck when it comes to actually getting the dirt bike to places worth riding.

It will be via A roads so no constant throttle input if that helps? Thanks Smile

Is there a bike trailer for a bike?

If you catch my drift....

Small car, trailer, bam.

Alternatively get some friends with bikes that do this sort of thing, add your bike to theirs in the van and pay them £20 or so.

There's a similar setup at Ashdown Farm, between Goring and Blewbury (A417, South Oxfordshire). Maybe a bit closer to you.

I know of two tracks that allow practice sessions within 20 miles of Shrewsbury. Just been to one in Welshpool today, £15 for as long as you like... I was shattered after 15 or so laps and had to call it a day!

A lot of places don't seem to actively advertise their tracks for open sessions but I think if you try ringing a few quadbiking places they will let you use their land for a nominal fee.

I could work my ass off and get a car license, car and insurance. But cheapest insurance for me on a car is £1700.. For a 1.0 shit bucket.

Don't have any friends that ride off road, only one that is planning to but like me can't afford the insurance for a car.

Ashdown farm is 86 miles away which is a lot more realistic? Thumbs Up I'm from Birmingham.. Do you know any closer then that? Thanks.

Google J4M54... It's a technical track (or so I'm told) its maybe 20 miles from bham?

You sure about this ktm 300? I'm not sure it's going to be ideal for you.

That is because chavs and noobs drive 1 litre cars.

1.4 Focus or 1.8 Rover 75 aren't exactly "beginner" cars but are the cheapest cars I could insure the first year of driving Thumbs Up

Have a look into enduroland.

I have done a couple of their events. I ride a ttr250, if it is fairly local I ride the bike there, take off mirrors and number pate, stick em in my rucksack.

I am in the same position, 19, no car licence, no friends. And a trail bike.

I live in Leamington Spa so most of their tracks are closer to me than to you, although an extra 20 ish miles should be fine on the 300?

My mate commutes 18 miles a day to college on his EXC 125, flat out, may I add and it hasn't blown up yet, after about 18 months.

Fairly expensive, 40 pounds a pop, so that makes you feel the need to do more laps to get your moneys worth, they are pretty good as well, it's just difficult getting used to so many people riding around you.

Other than that I can't recommend anything else, hope it helps.

I know very little about dirt bikes so excuse my possible ignorance, but would doing long road miles not kill offroad tyres? If so could you bungee wheels to the back and change there?

Yes road miles slaughter offroad tyres.

I just got 800 miles out of a set of Metzeler 6 days on a 20hp 250 four stroke, god knows what I would get on a more powerful bike.

I also average about 1200 miles on Michelin AC10s, I am still looking for a good compromise between mud and longevity, as I don't care about the wobbles, sliding and general lack of road manners on knobblies.

I did get quoted £1300 for a 1.2 something which was the lowest but more costly to buy the veichle and i did try all sort of engine sizes. This was 6 or so months ago though.

When I pay off the bikes etc and i'm back to having spare cash i'll definatly consider a car if I can get insurance closer to a grand. Having a on road bike/ dirt bike along with a car and trailer would be perfect but i'm starting to dream with a £100-£150 a week wage Laughing

Cheers Thumbs Up yeh i'm pretty much definatly getting the 300. I know it's not very practical but i've got the thundercat for that. Obviously longer journeys will be a pain but i'll work something out. I've trying so hard to save/ get test rides and to get time off to look in ktm dealers that I couldn't not get one now Laughing

Sorry fladdem not great at this quoting business. Enduro's look like mad fun but seem a bit too 'serious' . I would like to do a few but occasionaly having silly fun without having to worry about my lap times or w.e would be fun (hill climbs, deep water etc). Thumbs Up

The thing is Enduroland is a pay and play type arrangement. Not in a sense of, you go up a hill and then turn around at the top and go back down. but as in a pretend enduro. They do real races but also practise days.

On an unrelated note, where would you get some CO2's? I have been looking into them prior to this. I assume you use them to recommend them? What are they like?

Thumbs Up

a 1.4 Peugeot 306 was cheaper to insure than a 1.0 corsa for me.

Y u no do car test & rent van with a few mates? £60 a day, three bikes in it, £20 a head for the van. Win at life.

The majority of places wont lend there vans to folks under 25.... the same way insurance companies wont insure you in a van for less than 2k if your under 25.

Gee I can't wait till I turn 25 and suddenly become a mature adult infallible on the road.

Four marks is definitely not worth travelling too.
Ashdown farm is more of an oldschool motocross track - long and winding rather than compact with a more supercross nature as many are these days.
They do run enduros there, where you get to use lots of countryside, but that's not their regular weekend days.

Enduro land is good because they move around and usually have decently varied terrain replicating a well thought out enduro, but without feeling the need to do it all riding as fast as you can - and not feeling bad about taking breaks and the like.

There will be motocross tracks near to you.

An extra £1200 is hardly a "bargain"

My 09 Civic Type S is £350 per year less than a 1995 1.3 Megane Thumbs Up

Yeh I heard enduro land is good for all levels of riders which is good as of course I've never properly rode a dirt bike, never mind done an enduro. Laughing

What do you guys think about riding on private land without the owners permission or riding on through council owned forests etc? I know a few places such as a park/field near my house that has areas way out of view that are hard to get to on foot so no one ever bothers. Is it not worth the risk/gives dirt riders a bad name? Just a thought as I see it all the time on youtube, more so then legal riding.

Thanks.

The insurance on a van would be far more reasonable than for a car as long as the arse rapers are prepared to believe it's for private use and not business. Most only have 2 seats and therefore reduces potential liability. My guess is you could get a trail bike and a fair few spares as well as your gear in the back of something like a Peugeot Expert.

I have done that, my honda MT50 used to be my hooligan bike, surprised we never got caught, I had a mate on a derbi senda and we'd hoon around anywhere we wanted, I wouldn't recommend it, I had the police called a few times, one mate even had a TW 125 and we'd go round the woods with the 'peds. We were the stereotypical scumbags. Number plates were removed to complete the scum look.

Good fun but I decided I didn't want to lose my licence before I even got it and now I don't really have mates on bikes so the temptation has been removed.

It's funny, that was only three years ago yet it feels much longer.

Not in my experience for a young driver. At least for a SWB transit and bigger. Presume the big size, limited visibility and number of dinks you tend to see in them are factors.
