change brake fluid

Good afternoon,

As per haynes manual, I would like to change my brake fluid. it is currently red, can i drain the system fully and then use brown color brake fluid in it ?

I guess you can remove all fluid from the caliper by pushing the pistons back while the brake pipe nut is off.

Then put it back together and bleed the system.
is that ok ?

I suppose mine is dot4

To change the fluid, just bleed the old stuff through using the normal procedure (tube on bleed nipple, other end in jar with brake fluid covering the open end, crack open bleed nipple, squeeze lever, hold lever, tighten nipple - repeat until done) and topping the reservoir up with the new stuff as you go.

Brake fluid colour doesn't matter as long as the DOT rating is correct.

The brown stuff.......it's not been sitting in the garage for years and was once red by any chance?

no brown and yes in the garage for the past 2 years with the cap on so still should be ok as used it in my other bike.

Sealed or just with the cap on?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic and your life may depend on your brakes working correctly. Brake fluid is also cheap.

just cap on in my utility room. I did put it in my 125 and was ok . I can buy another one though just thought this may be wasted hence why wanted to use it again.


would it absorb water even if the cap is closed ? it is a 4 liter bottle
