What to do next?

Took it to the garage and was told if its dropped a valve its cheaper to get a 2nd hand engine then fix. Tbh I don't think they even took it a part to check for definite. Been quoted 900-1k for a 2nd hand engine and its fitment.

Options

1. Brake for parts (Bike is mint so don't want to do this)

2. Repair old engine

3. Stick 2nd hand engine in, I have options here because tt600/Daytona 600/650 engines fit.

Either way its going to cost me money so I am coming round to the idea of saving for a Daytona 650 engine and putting that in. In my mind its going to cost for S4 engine so for a bit more I'd rather the 650 which had 15-20bhp more performance.

Can't claim on insurance on TPFT and with prices round here a claim would fuck me big time.

So what you lot think?

Insurance doesn't cover engine faults unless caused by theft or accident anyway.
If it just goes bang of it's own accord that is just part of the fun, insurance would just laugh at you.

Also, remember to keep the oil topped up next time.

There's a reasonably definate way of checking if a valve has dropped without dismantling the engine.

The valve will have stopped the engine from turning by jamming between the piston and the head. So if you were rotate the crank backwards (there's a cover on the end of the crank that can be removed to facilitate this), you can confirm that it's not the pistons seized. Once the engine gets back towards TDC (top dead centre) though, the valve will jam it again.

Daytona engines aren't a straight forward swap. I don't think I know they have a different injection system so you can't just run it with the S4 ECU. I think the TT600 should work as long as you remap it however that engine is not as 'nice' as the S4 by all accounts, 10 BHP more but less miderange also it is MUCH worse at low revs.

Oil and filter was done 1.5k before it went and check the Oil regularly and it was fine.

I have never known a dropped valve seize a motor. they normally grenade the piston and take chunks out of the head.

Buy a good working engine for x money.

Break your existing engine and sell the working parts individually on ebay for y money.

Don't be surprised if x<y

I think I'm not surprised because my first TT600 did exactly that. The engine completely seized and it had dropped a valve.

I swapped the bike for a TZR250 in the end.

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but saw thread and wanted to reply.

I got my S4 back on the road a couple of weeks ago after many months.

I've had the bike for years with no bother at all. However, early this year I decided to see what the S4 could really do, and (for the first time) redlined it in all gears. It felt brilliant right up until I dropped a valve and wrecked the engine.

I then had the same options... Break it for spares, fit another engine, or repair it.

After investigating the damage, it would have cost more than the bike's worth to repair, so decided on another engine.

I know that you mentioned a TT600 engine, but do you know there are different internal bits? The differences, give the S4 more power low down and through the range. The S4 fuelling (stutter aside) is much better as well.

I found that there's loads of TT600 engines out there, but it's much harder to find a good S4 one. Eventually I did find one in Ireland which cost 500 Euros (approx £417). Not cheap, but I was desperate by then.

I don't know about fitting a Daytona engine. It sounds interesting, but if you were happy enough with the S4 then it might be simpler to get another S4 engine if you can find one.

The TT600 only has different cams and a different map I believe.

From reading that post about the D650 engine, it looks like you would need everything from a D650 engine, airbox, injectors, ECU, exhaust, loom. Probably best off buying a wrecked bike.

It would be worth stripping the top end of the old motor to find out if it is valve/piston damage and how many of before you decide on if to repair/re-build or not?

I'd probably look for a secondhand engine as a temporary measure if you can and will get around to re-building the old lump. For that reason I'd keep it as simple as possible and try to get a like for like motor instead of a 650cc that might need work to make it fit or run properly.

If you fix the old motor properly then I'd much rarther sell on the unknown get your bike on the road engine, than sell the re-built or broken original lump.
