Posted: 22:40 - 11 Oct 2013 Post subject: Full UK Licence Bike and Car |
 |
|
Hi Guys,
New to the forum and already asking for some advice.., i've searched and searched and can't find a similar topic so here goes
I got my Full UK driving licence 5 years ago entitled to ride motorbikes (Class A on the back) and this year I passed my car practical (class B on the back), section 4a on my licence is my car pass date. Now when applying for insurance you have a couple of sections
"What type of Licence do you have" - I Pick "Full Uk Manual" (right so that cover bike and car)
"When did you obtain licence" - Uhhh 5 Years ago?
And that's it doesn't mention that it's specific to any vehicle other than licence would I be wrong in putitng 5 years down? appreciate the help in advance as this one has stumped me |

Anecdotally I suspect you could be done for that since the 33bhp license or A2 is different to the full category A license. |
Depends on your point of view. Before January 19th 2013 there was no such thing as an "A2" license category - I have an email from the DVLA confirming this. There was only "A1" and "A" with or without a 25kW endorsement (and 0.16kW/kg not shown on the license). Of course, the DVLA then record "A <= 25kW" on the counterpart as "A2" under "previous entitlement", because shut up that's why.
That didn't stop eBike winning a case at the ombudsman on the basis that they were asking how long a customer had held his "A" category for.
There's some justification for that, as eBike are one of the very few insurers who do even list different license categories, although hilariously (to me) they always just listed "A <= 25kW" as "A2" even before that category existed.
The thing is that they cost 2 years of "A2" (when you can really only have 0 or 1 year under the 25kW system) the same as 0 years of "A" so they weren't actually stitching the customer up.
That's eBike though, you'll find that most insurers are still only listing "provisional" or "full", more than two decades after motorcycle licenses were first graduated.
Under those circumstances, I count from my test date, since that's their choice and I'm going by what they say rather than by what they might have imagined they meant.
tl;dr version: if the insurer lists different categories tell them how long you've had that category. If they only list provisional or full, go by your first pass date even if that's the comedy A1 license. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'm not sure if the customer caved after that. Ombudsman decisions are only binding on the insurer, not the customer. The thing is, I do sort of agree with their decision, but not for the reasons that they give.
Well, I've been counting from my pass date with other insurers, and would welcome an insurer trying it on. I'm happy to cost them money at the ombudsman, and then at Sheriff Court... if they even have any Scotch legal presence. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
