Hi guys,

I'm starting to save for my new motorbike and have a budget of £2000
Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding a decent selection of bikes in my price range.
The Autotrader and DLVA A2 list have bikes that are mainly new.
I decided to look for restrictors on ebay as I'm assuming if a bike model has a restrictor, it can be legally restricted.

Here are some I have found that I like.

GS500
Honda Varadero 1000 Restricted.
Bandit Restricted
Honda CBF Restricted
Suzuki GSXR 600 Restricted
Suzuki SV 650 Restricted
Yamaha FZS 600 Restricted

The restrictors listed on ebay seem to be all for carburetor models only. So for example only FZS pre 02 (I think) can be restricted.
Any suggestion on what to get or even if any of them aren't legally allowed to be ridden on an A2 Licence under the new laws.
They have made this way too complicated. Confused

GS500 is already A2 compliant and falls well within your budget.

Nope. All GSXR600s claimed over 70kW, although if you're a div, you might go by a few dyno test reviews that measured rear wheel power.

So anyone selling restrictors for a Gixxer is seriously suspect NO matter HOW many SHOUTY CAPS they put in the ADVERTS (kickstart engineering, right?). You're probably wasting your money on the washers if you want to actually be legal, and are really just buying a meaningless bit of paper that you could print off yourself for the cost of the ink.

Hayabusa if you don't care.

Agreed.

GS500 will mean no hassle from insurers or coppers, you'll only be on it for 2 years anyway.

Yea, Kickstart Engineering.

The GS500 is the one I will probably go for but I would prefer a bike a that looks a bit less shit.

Gpz500 will be great with the 47bhp restrictors in Thumbs Up and it looks good...

The official DSA list of A2 legal motorcycles:

BMW G650GS
Brough Superior (uhhh.. seriously?)
Gilera Fuoco 500
Honda FX650, NC700, Shadow, SLR650 and VT750S
Husqvarna TR650 Strada and Terra (restricted), TE449 and TE511
Kawasaki ER5, ER6-F, ER6-N, Versys, VN900, (all restricted) and W800
KTM Duke 690 (restricted)
Moto Guzzi V7
Suzuki GSX650F, Gladius, SV650, VL800, VZ800 (all restricted) and GS500
Yamaha MT-03, TMAX, XT660R, XT660Z Tenere and YP400 Majesty.

Evidently it's a work in progress.

Nothing wrong with the Kawasaki GPZ 500, but I'm guessing what you want is a more modern-styled motorcycle.

GS500F looks pretty decent.

Mind you, I enjoyed my GPZ500, and it's less of a budget build. You may find that if you dyno one now that it won't come out more than 35kW - or not enough to matter anyway.

My 06 Yamaha MT-03 is A2 legal, the latter models have 2bhp more, but are still just below the limit depending on which specs you read.

So many grey areas. Shit rules.

Loads of 1980s 500s will be well within the limits. Looked after ones can be just as reliable as any new bike, just gotta find one.

Pre 2000 SRAD GSXR 600, 175kg and 93bhp. Its right on the limit.

Could always go for a gsxr400 or similar (cbr, zxr, vfr, rvf)

GSXR 600s are probably over given the manufacturers claims of ~95+

What, the line clearly marked as "Power at rear wheel"?

Which is really what licensing should be based on, but it's not, it's "net engine power", i.e. the (irrelevant) manufacturer bench number, or the (inaccurate) dyno voodoomaths estimate.

Either way, any 97 onwards Gixxer is not A2 legal, no matter how much you want to kid yourself.

That's not to say that you won't get away with it, or shouldn't have a go, of course. Wink

Would the R6 be fine to restrict?
I found some restrictors on ebay from multiple manufacturers.

This is bullshit. You gotta know the bhp and weight to know if a bike fits into the restriction. Yet that information is not always easily found. I don't think mcn is a good source for this information.

I think the only real risk of riding a bike over the restriction limit is invalidating insurance. As I highly doubt a cop will know.

Here's the thing.

You can ride it restricted to 25kW on the old 25kW (33bhp) license.

You can't ride it on the new 35kW license at all because all models claim well over 70kW as stock.

Yes, that's right. Get your license on any old 125, ride a a 25kW R6. Get your licence on a 35kW NC700, you can't ride that same 25kW R6.

Thanks, Brussels! Thumbs UpVery HappyThumbs Up

I picked up a 2007 SV650S with just under 6k miles on it a few months back for ~£2000.

Fitting the restrictor was a bit of a ball-ache (small plate which restricts throttle movement), but I couldn't be happier with the bike.
It's a bit addictive for my liking, I've gone through 3 rear tyres already!

i did my 2 years 33bhp on a dirt cheap gs500. its alright, cheap in every regard, and easy to work on. cb500 is similar but better so i'm told.

I decided to buy something cheap that i wouldn't lose money on (sold my gs for profit) to ride around for a bit first, whilst saving for something nicer and trying some things out to see what i wanted next! ended up with a vfr750f

The exact limit is 46.6bhp, so the most powerful the bike can be unrestricted is 93.2bhp.

I hate this limit, because the carburetted Gixxers (pre-2000) were 95bhp. Just a cock hair too much.

EDIT: 35KW converts to 46.936hp, but the form I had to sign to send off for a restriction kit for my ER6 definately said 46.6
