If you have a number of bikes it makes more sense to insure the rider than each bike individually. Is there a company that people would recommend that insures the rider rather than the bike or is that a non-starter?

There are a few options to reduce your insurance costs if you have a decent collection...

Multi bike policies are for those on the lower end of the scale - just search multi bike insurance. Seems like ~6 is the max for this.

If you have quite a few it may be worth setting up a company that can own the bikes. You can then get trade insurance. You'd need an income (income, not profit) though, so you'd have to make sure you sold them or hired them out occasionally.

If you have a massive collection then you can lodge a bond:
Road Traffic Act 1988 wrote:
(1)Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the [F1Senior Courts] the sum of [F2£500,000], at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner’s control.

Although, assuming you can earn 10% interest on that cash you're best off paying insurance if the premiums are below £50k (even assuming no incidents)

You'll want them all listed on a policy, as otherwise the DVLA will come at you with flensing knives, looking for their hundred pounds of Continuous Insurance flesh.

Cheers, Rog. I've been quoted £223 tpft by Bennett's so I'll look around for a few more.

For multi bikes?

I pay more than that for 4 bikes currently.

You used to be able to buy something called a "rider policy". Suffice to say that it was far too cost effective and therefore culled from the ledgers many, many years ago Neutral

That and you get the issue of "where's the insurance if it's parked on the road" argument that occurs in me being covered on my insurance to drive a mates car (who's insurance happens to have run out)

Hi

If the bikes are older then a classic policy is a possibility. Aon / Footman James will cover multiple bikes on a classic policy as long as they are over 10 years old.

All the best

Keith

I have insured my bikes individually for 5 years now.
What I found was that multi bike policys are a good price for 2years then they start to rise in price, you never accrue NCB on the second bike and the number of underwriters who will provide such a policy is a lot less than a single bike policy.....
I found it cheaper to insure separately
that said it depends on your circumstances & bikes .. shop around

Using a trade policy to insure multiple private machines is a very dodgy thing to do even if you set up a 'company' for it. In the event of a claim every insurance company wants to reduce the costs as much as possible and be quite sure on the fact that they will be asking for accounts and receipts, proof of trading, etc., etc. Most of them now will also be more difficult to get policies in the second year if you can't prove trading - they've finally cottoned onto the fact that people are using them as a 'multi' or 'modified' cheap option (prices have risen drastically in the past 3 years too).

Multibike policies are a good option for some, but as already stated it depends on your personal situation. For me insuring singly my insurance premiums are £74, £52 and £49 (last two are most recent quotes on 'very nearly finished' bikes Wink ). Using a multibike policy this would be £390 for the first bike, then 'about' 80 quid for each one after that.........

Hit the comparison sites, have a phone around - there's no single easy answer.

Thanks , people. I may ask about the individual policy if it turns out a lot less as I'm not planning on keeping three bikes and will look to offload the 125 to my lad. I'll keep phoning, as suggested.

Edit: Carol Nash just quoted £90 to add the Fazer it to my existing YBR 125 policy which expires at the end of May 2014.
Anybody see a problem with that?
DAS Mod 2 Test next Thursday.

Wait till DAS is done.

Otherwise that would piss £90 into the wind Laughing

Ha Ha! Carole Nash now charged me £80 for the multi-bike policy until the end of May with £50 excess. Oh, yes! Now insured.
