bike was running ok then cut out suddenly.

wouldnt restart by electric or bump start.

put the battery on charge for a bit then went to test the battery using a meter whilst it was connected to the bike. at this point bike was tickin over fine after a bump start.

applied the voltmeter to battery terminals, got a spark on contacting the terminals and the engine tried to cut out, but continued to tick ova okies when meter quickly taken away from battery.

tried same several times to get a reading of the voltage but engine kept trying to cut out.

so removed battery & put on charger. later refitted battery and when terminals connected got a spark plus the starter motor tried to turn whilst no keys in ignition.

also a arcing - like sound coming from somewhere on the bike but couldnt locate it exactly.

before all this started, the battery let going flat. dont know whether this is from lack of charging or a short circuit.

lastly, with engine turned off and key removed from ignition, the voltmeter was applied in series between the battery and the bike postive wire and a 12v draw was registered on the meter.

any ideas of where to start with all this much appreciated. cheers guys.

If you're getting sparking when you put a meter on the battery then you're doing it wrong... Or the meter is broken.

Check the leads are plugged into the right place on the meter and that the meter is set to V (volts).

Getting a spark when just putting the meter across the battery suggests to me that you have it set wrong.

The starter motor turned when the negative terminal was touching the frame via a screwdriver when I was screwing the bolt into the nut if that helps matters.

There is no blown fuses which leads me to believe there is no short circuit on the fuse side but looking at the wiring diagram one lead from the battery goes into the fuse box and the other into the relay. So testing the relay tomorrow will be my first call.

Black to black, red to red.

Is there anyway on your final ride it sounded like your starter motor was continually on?

Attach the MM probes and then start bike, get a reading then rev to 4.5 k and check the reading again...

Some bikes can charge at idle like my cbr, but my sv needs to be above 2.2k either way you're looking for around 13.7-14.5 v on the battery when 'charging' on the bike

your meters probably on the amps setting! put it on volts! usually the lead goes in a different hole.
