So a guy at work has a Kia Sportage - 3 years ol and 63k miles.

Driving home the other night and the oil light comes on then the engine cuts out. Pulls over and tries to start it, which it did but sounds rough so stops and calls the AA.

Long story short - AA man didn't like the symptoms so towed to his local KIA dealer.

Its still under its 7 year warranty and after inspection, the garage has said it looks like the wrong type of oil was used at servicing - which isn't true - he has used the low ash diesel stuff.

Anyway, have a gander at the pic of the sump when they dropped it. Any thoughts?

I think there is probably some particulate contamination in the oil there that the filter might have missed.

Best get him to strain it through an old pair of tights to check for any fine metal particles. I think he might have chipped one of the piston skirts a bit.

Bit of JB Weld and whack it through a parts washer will see it right.

On the other hand, Shocked . I haven't seen an engine that trashed for a very long time. Hard to believe what the Kia technician is saying. Trying to get of a big warranty claim?

Spot on - they are trying to wriggle out of it - he has had it serviced by an independant mechanic but with Kia parts purchased through the dealer themselves.

He has brought the proper oil for each service too. Has us stumped as to what has caused it.

I run el boggo standard gash oil in the Varadero, the oil has no particles or swarf in there upon change time and it works 100 times harder than that car.

Head to higher people in Kia Thumbs Up

On the Civic forum I frequent a lot of people have said the 7 year Kia warranty isn't what it's cracked up to be and you have to read the small print very carefully.

I think on the whole Iridium spark plugs and a powerband would have prevented that tbh.

I will be interested to see to what lengths they will go to avoid paying out. I did think that a 7 year warranty on cheap car seemed a bit good to be true.

How can they tell the wrong oil was used just at looking at it?

We had this with a guy recently, yamaha recommend yamalube but he used castrol. Our argument was that all oil is governed by api and they're all to the same standard. He fought it and won.

Also, surely that much damage can't be caused just through oil?! If it is then... daaaaayam

As long as the oil used meets or exceeds what they recommend then I can't see them wriggling out of it on that score.

It's properly lunched though Shocked

Hi

I would love to see what has been destroyed in the engine to leave that mess. There is a complete gear wheel in that mess Laughing . Oil pump drive maybe?

Neighbour had a couple of Kia Sortento 4x4 things. Did about 200k miles between them. Not sure how many engine they went through but at least 2 complete engines and a major top end rebuild. Doesn't really give you any confidence.

All the best

Keith

We thought it the remains of the oil pump also - the saga is ongoing with Kia currently as the dealer has sent the photos off to them.

New engine job either way though.

If they moan and wiggle just quote the Sale of Goods Act and say it wasn't fit for purpose.

That engine is fucked. Laughing

Should be ok if it's put back together, just use some cheap oil and add half a jar of marmite. Fuel consumption will also be massively improved and emissions virtually negated and as a bonus a 750% increase in engine power.

Failing that I would not give up having a go at the dealership.

If they are claiming that the wrong oil was used, it is up to them to prove it via laboratory tests which will probably be just as expensive as sorting the problem in the first place.

Isn't that a couple of piston rings on top of the pile?

Oil pressure light??? Was there actually any oil left in it or had he run it dry?

Not sure, as one looks bent and a ring would just snap.

All the best

Oil was full on dipstick when the AA man dipped it - which leads us to think it may be the oil pump that has failed.

It looks like instant gasket has been used for a sump gasket, cheap mechanic or is that what they gave your guy for a service item?
