So I was coming up the M1 earlier today and noticed that the average speed cameras between Sheffield and Wakefield only point at the sharp end. Does this mean I can 'hypothetically' go at whatever speed I like? Obviously I wouldn't, being a ~cough~ law abiding citizen and that...

Are temporary speed limits, overseen by average speed cameras, legally enforceable?

Yes.

If they have SPECS then they are enforceable.
But they face the front of vehicles so ignore bikes.

These aren't flash flash speed cameras. They're the ones on the motorway that enforce the 50mph limit through roadworks. I plan to be going through about 10pm Sunday evening though, when no self respecting road worker will be working. They only point at the front plate, so am I free to zoom?

I can't. Doing Movember and my 'tash is irritated by the helmet padding. First world problems.

Yes you can go as fast as you like without danger of being caught by the cameras as long as you are certain that there are no rear facing ones at all, I have noticed more and more average speed camera zones that have every third camera facing the other way.

Also beware of unmarked police cars.

camera free roads to ride and play and have fun on are becoming very rare here in the uk......cant even venture out in the country side without a high likelyhood of a fat cop slouched over, breathing heavily and dribbling all over the hand held speed cam

Off topic as not average speed cameras but...
On the M62 Leeds area they have the variable speed lanes (so they can use the hard shoulder for traffic congestion Confused ). However, when off the speed cameras behind the signs are still active. There has already been stories of people receiving NIPs for 70+mph.

IMHO there's also the chance of a massive cockup. Can you really be sure the camera still doesn't think speed is 50 when the matrix is actually off? Plus approaching one overhead sign and suddenly switched on to 50mph. Cue some rapid braking just in case there wasn't any wriggle room. Good road safety measure that, not.
