Posted: 21:10 - 19 Nov 2013 Post subject: New biker! First collision today - advice? |
 |
|
Hi all!
I have been riding a CBF 125 since January this year on L plates, am currently doing lessons in preparation for mod 2.
I am using my bike as a daily commute from Welwyn Gdn City to central London. On the way home today, a guy turned into a side road across the front of me without indicating, had to brake due to someone crossing the road and I hit his back left side and came off. He got out, shouted something abusive about learners and bus lanes, got back in his car and drove off without giving me any details or anything....
I have his reg plate and know the car make/model/colour etc, and was just wondering what the best course of action is? I feel like I should phone the local police to report the accident, and also my insurance to report it but not claim (yet).
I am uninjured, and the bike for the most part looks okay, but I will check tomorrow when it's light.
Any advice on anything I should do/not do/say/not say to police/insurers would be great. Thanks!

Looks like a spycam-on-a-pole to the south, should have a nice view of it.
No witness details though? Nobody bothered to see if you were OK? Laaahndahn.
What I expect: police will do sod all, your insurer will rape you if you report it to them, even as an FYI rather than a loss.
Unless you can actually find some significant damage to your bike, might be as well to just shrug that one off. You should report it to a copper though, to cover your own back and to make their numbers look worse. It doesn't have to be down the cop shop, you can bag a constable on the street, although he/she/it might not know that. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I believe that London bus lanes were out of bounds to bikers until a few years ago.

WHEN did this happen? (what time)
That bus lane is active between 4 and 7 pm Monday to Friday. I seen no left turn filter for it at that junction so if it was active, I strongly suspect you should not have been there. There are no motorcycles shown on the sign about 200yds back up the road.
That said, still report the collision to the police. They are almost certainly not interested but if the car driver suddenly notices it's going to cost him £££ to fix his taillight and reports you, you covered your arse. You need a log number, then you have fulfilled your legal duty to report an accident. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. This type of incident is one of the reasons fro taking great care if legally in a bus lane and passing moving traffic to the right
I for one would not pass anything that is moving above a few miles an hour on the left
Yes if and I don't think this bus lane Is motorcycles allow it may be legal but it is not a move I would advise and I think it could depending on the speeds involved be Careless driving
The car turning Left without indicating also could be said to be careless but his defence will be Motorbike are not allowed in the bus lane so I didn't expect him to be there of going so fast as to be unable to stop when I got caught out by the pedestrians
I think you going to have to take this one on the chin and be glad the car driver is not after you to pay for his damage
We all make mistakes try to learn from them
Take care out there

Motorbikes have been allowed in some bus lanes since before January 2012 as as part of two trials; red routes and some other bus lanes depending on borough. January 2012 is just when it became permanent.
Generally you always need to check the signs though, as even some red routes have portions that don't allow motorcycles. I'm thinking of the bus stops in front of Kings Cross on Euston Road in particular. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Call the police do it sooner rather than later he commited a crime.
If he had damage and it was your fault don't you think he would have stuck about.
Kudos on the paint diagram ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.
