Hi BCF community.

Thanks for the advice etc. in the last thread. I got 2 new front tyres and slightly used front and now am waiting on a part -worn rear.

Here's the front:

Pirelli dragon (MTR01) - 120/60 -r17 55H(new)
Pirelli dragon supercorsa- 120/70 -zr17 58W(new)
Dunlop sportmax race replica -120/70 -zr17 58 W (used but lots thread, no damage )

Back:
Metzeler tourance 150/17-17 69V (used , lots of thread, no damage)

My question is: which front to use with the rear, does it really matter?

Considering im hoping to cover a lot of miles (if conditions allow in winter). Ill go through all tyres but which to use first in winter, then spring and summer?

thanks guys

Edit (i mean thanks guys and ladies)

Personally, I'd use a rubber tyre on the front to match that rear - the one closest to me at the time.

Of course, there will probably be a tyre 'expert' ready to tell you that if you don't have 2 brand new perfectly matched same make and batch tyres then you will surely die. And while you're dying, you will kill many many nuns and kittens.

Pick the one with the prettiest tread pattern first.

This, Pilot Road 2/3s would be my choice for all weathers on any bike.

Current bike came with a new set of Pilot Power 2's and they are pretty bad in anything resembling wet or cold. Brilliant in the summer though.

See? Don't make use of the tyres you have that are perfectly serviceable, ignore the fact you have them and go spend money on a new 'set' of tyres... Rolling Eyes

Btw, you're going to need more rear tyres, one rear and four fronts is getting the ratio backwards.

If I had to choose from what you have then I'd use the MTR01 in the coldest and wettest months.

The other two are very racy and wont do you any favours. Odd rear tyre choice for anything other than a big enduro though.

Given the choice, I wouldn't particularly want to use any of them.

Ok,

Cheers for the input. At the moment ill go the MTR01 as it 'seems' to have better grip .

And I understand ill need more back ones and hopefully when im through these, ill go with pilot 3's

Any one recommend good tyre fitters in/ around birmingham? or u reckon it can be a diy job?

Still running downgeared TLR on Supercorsa SPs.

I prefer predictable front grip and negligible back grip for shitty conditions personally if you have to 'make do'
Would go for the dragon front tyre of the ones mentioned. If you aren't particularly confident, selling the two new tyres you have and putting the money towards a set of PR2s and engine bars might help.

In fact, just fit whatever tyre and engine bars and learn how to ride in winter.

Personal opinion

DIY. I always fit my own tyres - car or bike. Go to any place that fit tyres and see if they'll sell you a tub of tyre soap - maybe cost up to about 15quid, but that's less than a lot of places charge to fit a single tyre (and a cheap paintbrush to put it on). I got tyre levers from poundland which are acceptable after filing to remove sharp corners etc.

'Breaking the bead' to remove tyres can be tricky and takes a bit of practice unless you can get or make a bead breaker. Doing it by hand, soap up the rim and bead for removal, push the tyre bead into the rim well and work it over.

For fitting, use a new valve if you can, they're only a quid or so each - or at the very least properly check the old one - cut the old one out (cut off the bit inside the tyre and it'll pull out by hand), soap the new one and pull it through from inside using something like a pushbike handpump tube as a handle. Soap up the new tyre and put it on, making sure the first part that goes on sits in the 'well' in the middle of the rim. There is usually a coloured blob on a new tyre (can wear off partworns though) and if you line this up with the valve you usually don't need to bother with balancing. Inflate the tyre until it pops into place - if you have to go above about 50psi to seat it, let the air out, apply more soap to where it's sticking then inflate again. Then adjust the pressure as required.

Once you get the hang of it, it's an easy job.

ok,

I was considering wheel balancers:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Wheel-Balancer-All-In-One-Front-or-Rear-Paddock-Stand-/301009709123

or https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-WHEEL-BALANCER-BALANCING-STAND-BIKE-MOTORBIKE-RACE-TRACK-DAY-PADDOCK-/350827031595

or getting a adaptor only for paddock stand
