PostPosted: 23:41 - 22 Nov 2013    Post subject: whats the best scooter for my son. Reply with quote

hi guys.

i am buying a scooter for my son for xmas, he is 16 and just passed his cbt so looking for a 50cc.

now i want a nice looking scooter for my son something sporty looking as he is not a fan of the standard shape bike, the bike must be rev and go as have gears on a 50cc bike just seems silly, but want something reliable and safe at the same time. i have a budget of about £900

i was looking at something like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GILERA-DNA-50cc-MOPED-EXCEPTIONAL-CONDITION-12-MONTHS-MOT-SUPERB-RUNNER/111215250662?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D2891865080411366041%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D281199568762%26

or like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kinroad-49cc-50-cc-road-motorcycle-moped-2010-plate-long-mot-bit-of-tax-/390703172497?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item5af7b94b91

i wondered what you guys think of these bike and if you had any other recommendations that may suit him,

thank for any help.

Your ebay links do not work.

A 50cc scooter is generally only used for a year. They are a bad idea if journeys take in anything over a 40mph road (even then pushing it). They are ideal for commuting within a city.

My daughter got a Vespa LX50 and still has it. It's more solid than the plastic faired Japanese stuff. This plastic gets broken because (a) it's ridden by a 16 year old and (b) 16 year olds don't take care of stuff. The Vespa probably does not have street cred for a 16 year old boy though.

My son got a Jordan replica paddock bike 50cc. That was nothing but trouble because previous owners just wanted it to go faster. Nightmare for a 2 stroke.

I like the Vespa LX50 as it has a classic line to it but I doubt a 16 year old lad would agree with me.

When is he 17?
I've ridden and worked on a few and most were pretty gutless
One of my lads girl friends had a 50cc and I couldnt keep up with
the flow of traffic very easily which I thought was alarming.
We persuaded her to get a 125 and she loved it.
She also had fewer incidents on it.

Also be very cautious when buying a second hand 50
most kids cane the arse off em !
this is quite natural of course but a 'rode hard put away wet' 50
doesnt tend have a long life unless you throw money at it

my son would kill me if i got him a vespa. he will only be using the bike to get to and from school really prob about 10 miles a day.

so any ideas on what would be good for him like a make and model as i know nothing about scooters.

he is not 17 for another 12 months,

He'll want something like a Yamaha Aerox or a Piaggio NRG.
The Yamaha Jog RR looks pretty cool if you're 16.
Really you'd be better getting him a boring looking commuter style scooter as it will have more likely had an easier life but I doubt he'd be pleased.

-edited to say not the Kinrod in your original post! he'd be a laughing-stock, get no pussy, die a virgin and you'd never have Grandkids.

problem is he is bullied at at school. so if i get him a standard bike while he will be pleased he is on a bike by the time xmas finishes and he get back to school the kids that pick on him will make him feel so bad about his bike he wont want to use it for school. i jut want to get him a bike that no matter what they say to him he will know they are full of crap and he will be proud to get on his bike,

AL thanks for the bike idea's had a look and while i think they look cool i think he will want something more sporty looking like the gilera and i feel the dicks at his school wont be able to attack him.

AS FOR KINROAD = NO GRANDKIDS YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE lol.

At 16 if his priorities [appreciate the bullying scenario], are to look impressive, i'd be concerned if his attention will be on the road or more on whether everyone around him is admiring him on his bike and how cool it looks.

Realistically i would highly suggest waiting until 17 and getting a 100cc or above, i started biking on a 100cc peugeot speedfight [2] which i would recommend to be honest from my own experiences and those of 4-5 people i knew with them. That being said they're now a fair bit older bikes, and with no idea of the newer models, and the fact most older models have been ragged to death, i wouldn't put any promises on it being a good selection.

50cc bikes with L-plates on modern roads is not a nice scenario - you will be bullied by traffic, people will attempt to overtake and cut you up when its not nescessary or safe to do so a lot of the time, regardless of how carefully and respectfully you ride.

Its also to be frank slow as shit, going along at 28mph on a duel carriageway with cars going by at 70 and a double decker bus up your ass is not pleasent, and most of these scooters are neither comfortable nor particularly safe in winter weather - which is another thing to consider , it will be cold and unpleasent a lot of the winter month, or if not he will have to travel looking like the michelin man to keep warm.

At 17 theres a whole range of much faster, much more reliable, useable and nicer looking and feeling bikes available. Of course at 16 i'm sure he won't want to hear a word of it, as most teenagers don't, but it really is in his and your best interests overall i'd say.

lol he already does MMA and Boxing. and 1 on 1 he will kill the kids giving him trouble but the fact is they never confront him on there own. the last time a group of 7 came after him and when he fought back he broke 1 kids nose and then got suspended for 3 days and the gang told the teachers he started it all, up on his return to school the gang again confronted him after school a long with 2 parents ( roma gypsies ) and attacked him out side school.
lucky for him i turned up to to collect him from school and started swinging my torque wrench. i was then arrested and so was my son, we spent 6 ours explaining what had happened while all the gang and the parents told the police we started it.

we was charged with assault and public affray and was offered a caution. we refused the caution as we did nothing wrong so we was told we would have to go to court,
the following day the school head sent the school video recordings into the police and they showed in both cases my son and me had done nothing at all wrong and that in fact started it in both cases.
all charges was dropped.

the gang did not get charged at all even with the tapes they was just told to behave, stupid retarded law we have in this country. was told that if the police charged them in would make things worse.

The Gilera is the one to go for, they do look crotch-moistening.

Within a week, your lad will be trying to make it go faster. If he succeeds, he'll be riding otherwise than in accordance with his license, and likely with voided insurance and committing C&U offences.

Two weeks, we'll see you in the Workshop section. Title your post "NEED URGENT HELP!!!!" so that we know it's a Gilera.

Three weeks, the pikeys will torch it on camera and nothing will happen to them.

Welcome to the exciting world of moped ownership.

hi.

as you put it yes the gilera do look look crotch-moistening. i did wonder what else was around like these though must be other bikes like the gilera

he will not get the bike modded at all in any way shape or form. the only reason he can get a bike is because it can only do 30mph i do not want it going any faster than that and i know enough to know if he has been playing with the bike.

the bike is secure in the school and you have to go through a controlled door to get to where the bike will be so the pikeys wont get anywhere near it,

As retardedly hilarious as this thread is, if your prerogative is to make your son look cool in front of the kids at school then you'd be better of just buying him an R6 and letting him ride it illegally.

Hell, if it's insured, taxed & MOT'ed then it's just as illegal as him riding a derestricted moped.

Of course, if you have your heart set on being boring then I'd suggest a geared 50. It'll be shit, the gearing will be horrible, he'll be up and down the box all the time, it'll break, it'll blow up and it will be a roller coaster of reliability but he'll likely look back on his time with it fondly (plus you can pick them up pretty cheaply this time of year).

Something like a GPR 50 ought to wet his whistle.

The ability to go 60 when required is a lot less dangerous than being forced to go 30 regardless from my experience Thumbs Down

dont bother getting your son a scooter as said bullies aka theives will steal it. change school or colllege or change area you live in

the legal way to deal with the cunts has not worked neither has the right way to deal with the cunts worked! (as in fighting back)

if you get your son the scooter it will not improve his cred it will just make him more a target.

cunts will always be cunts so unless your prepared to go full hard on them then quit while your ahead.

the scooter will bring a whole new breed of problems

When you're 16 anything chinese or four stroke is generally frowned upon by fellow 16 year olds.

If it's an auto he's wanting then Piaggio NRG/ZIP, Gilera Runner, Yamaha Aerox/Jog, Wouldn't recommend anything aircooled as they are seriously slow (for a two stroke).

I would recommend a geared bike but not that chinese pos you posted, stick to anything Derbi/Gilera/Aprilia and you can't really go wrong.

Sports exhaust is a must aswell, because believe it or not it does make a BIG difference, provided the bike is jetted correctly.

EDIT: if you don't want him going faster than 30 I seriously wouldn't bother. They're a hazard to the road, not by any fault of their own but because of other road users complete lack of respect and awareness of safety.

reliability wise your better off going for a 4 stroke engined scooter and anything japanese - Honda Yamaha preferably.

only thing is wont be fast. some of the yamaha ones look quite sporty too.

the best looking and performing scooters will be your aprilia, derbi, gilera etc - but italian and 2 strokes while the best looking are likely to have been tinkered with to try to make them go faster compromising reliability and italians arent the best at this in the 1st place. although like some italian cars are amongst the best looking in their class.

how about something like this yamaha aerox - its a 2 stroke but being japanese is likely to be ( but nothing in life is guaranteed ) reasonably reliable.
