hi all

just wondering if someone can help me out,sorry if this question has been asked before

ok so the tax on my bike runs out on the 30th november and im wondering what is the earliest i can buy a new tax disc with out loosing a month? i always go to the post office to buy it

i bought my tax last year on the 17th of december and lost out on 17 days

if i was to buy a new tax disc on the 29th of november 1 day before it runs out would i get a full years tax or would it end at the end of october?

should i wait untill the 1st of december to tax it to get a full year?

You can buy from the beginning of November and they will run it from the end of Nov as you already have a valid tax disc running until the end of Nov as long as you use the renewal notice issued to you

If you take your renewal notice you can do it any time from the date that you receive it or why don't you just do it online? You can wait until the day it runs out that way and don't have to give them your money until you actually have to. If you do it that way, you are also able to ride your bike until the new tax disc arrives in the post - I think it is up to 5 days.

My renewal shows that I can renew online any day after the 5th of November for the tax to start at the end of November. However over the counter it might be different (possibly mid month).

If you renewed on the 17th December then you probably should have had a choice for the VED to start on the 1st of December (ie, if you were taxing it a bit late) or the 1st January (ie, taxing it a bit early).

from what you said it appears your tax runs from November to November.
so when you bought it on the 17 December last year you didn't lose 17 days, you paid the tax you should have.
if your previous tax disc ran out in December then it would have ran from the end of December.
so when did your previous tax run out?

my bike was on sorn for about 7 months due to a bad crash (drunk driver) the tax ran out in may 2012 if i remember correctly i didn't re tax it untill 17th of december

I didn't realise it was different in the UK.

Over here, the day, month and year are printed out on the front of the tax disc.

For example, if I purchased my tax disc in the morning, it'll show that it's taxed until 24/11/14 so it's valid up to and including that day.

Don't see why the UK government can't/don't do this.

my tax disk is with the bike's handbook and the holder is on the dining table.

not found anywhere suitable to hang the holder, not had any issues
