You can buy from the beginning of November and they will run it from the end of Nov as you already have a valid tax disc running until the end of Nov as long as you use the renewal notice issued to you

If you take your renewal notice you can do it any time from the date that you receive it or why don't you just do it online? You can wait until the day it runs out that way and don't have to give them your money until you actually have to. If you do it that way, you are also able to ride your bike until the new tax disc arrives in the post - I think it is up to 5 days.

Hi

My renewal shows that I can renew online any day after the 5th of November for the tax to start at the end of November. However over the counter it might be different (possibly mid month).

If you renewed on the 17th December then you probably should have had a choice for the VED to start on the 1st of December (ie, if you were taxing it a bit late) or the 1st January (ie, taxing it a bit early).

All the best

Keith

What Keith says sounds about right.

I am however surprised that they'd let you tax a bike in December if it was already taxed as the whole system is computerised now so they would know if you had paid the VED already or not. Obviously if it wasn't taxed then yes, they would let you tax it in December and you would have had to pay from the beginning of the month.

from what you said it appears your tax runs from November to November.
so when you bought it on the 17 December last year you didn't lose 17 days, you paid the tax you should have.
if your previous tax disc ran out in December then it would have ran from the end of December.
so when did your previous tax run out?

My bike tax runs out on 30th november, renewed it online and it automatically set the new tax disc to start on the 1st (day after mine runs out).

Do it online, its easy and super quick to do Smile

Ye canny use a motor vehicle on public roads if it is not clearly displaying a valid tax disc.

I even think the state it must be on the LEFT side of the vehicle so to authority's worker can view it in relative safety from the kerbside. Fcuked if I know how they can see my bike tax discs unless they lie down on the fcuking pavement to read them. Smile

But you can of course ignore this LAW and do it but just risk a tug or a fine from some overtly zealous lump of shit in uniform.

I buy on-line and cannot remember if I used the bike/car without displaying officer.. Embarassed

"Display your tax disc
You must display a tax disc on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle’s windscreen. If there’s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.

A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from.

The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc cannot be transferred between vehicles.

If you use the postal licensing service at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first fourteen days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

While you are still waiting for your new tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

I didn't realise it was different in the UK.

Over here, the day, month and year are printed out on the front of the tax disc.

For example, if I purchased my tax disc in the morning, it'll show that it's taxed until 24/11/14 so it's valid up to and including that day.

Don't see why the UK government can't/don't do this.

Mine was in my wallet for almost three months, as it was a bit of a pain to change it over and I kept putting it off and forgetting. However, a couple of weeks ago, I had a reminder/warning stuck on my bike by a traffic warden, advising me to put a valid tax disc on it. Which I did.

You Sir, are sailing very close to the wind. Razz

I have a tax disc on a bike which shows 01.12.12......

So I'm almost legal as the vehicle is taxed and a disc 'is displayed on the left' but it isn't valid. I just keep forgetting to undo all the freakin' wee screws in my 'weather proof' tax disc holder as they are a cnutish size and the tool box is at the back of the garage and there's a load of shite between there and the door etc. etc. etc.

The sooner the cnut repeal this silly legal requirement and own up to it being a down right stealth tax (Not very stealthy though) the better. To load it based on engine size is a nonsense too as in general the bigger the engine the more duty paid on the extra fuel is burns. Rolling Eyes

I haven't displayed a tax disc for about 6 years after someone nicked it and kindly took my brake caliper bolt with them Evil or Very Mad

+1

Which one kicks out more, Honda NC700 or Aprilia RS125? I know my ER6 would be free VED if the rules for bikes were the same as cars.

Indeed, unless he's renewed his current tax disc online, in which case he has 14 days to have it displayed providing his old disc is still displayed and he has applied before the old one has expired - as quoted here : https://www.gov.uk/tax-disc#before-you-start

And as you say here :

I didn't know about the postal service that you mention so assume it must carry the same excemption as the online service.
