Morning all,

New to the forums, just bought a 929RRY (completely standard, 18,000 miles). Has been standing for a year but runs fine (as far as i can tell). I got 70 miles from the first tank until the light came on. Will wait and see if the second one is any better, guess it might just be clearing out the cr*p in the system. Other than checking the FPR though is there anything i should be doing?

Thanks,

Tom

So have you already checked the FPR? Will be the most likely culprit.

If not that have you got any codes stored or showing?

no not yet, only realised it was crap on fuel yesterday (first long ride), did some research last night and it seemed an obvious culprit but just wanted to check it made sense to other people too.

no fault codes, no running issues (other than jerky throttle but that seems normal and will get a PCIII) so i don't believe it is coils/plugs.

I don't know much about FireBlades but from a general biking point of view I'd check for any leaking pipes, even the newest of the 929's are over 10 years old now, add a year of sitting around doing not much and a perished rubber pipe somewhere doesn't seem out of the question.

Another vote for the FPR, change it along with the Reg/Rec on a consumables basis.

Thanks. With the reg/rec...wait til it shows signs of issues or just cough up now for the r1 conversion?

Spend 99p on a voltage display, then you will know when it goes and can change it before it does any damage.

No point wasting money replacing a perfectly fine RR.

How erratic is your idle?

Idle isn't really erratic at all, will look at the voltmeter you suggest in one of your other posts.

I got terrible mileage out of the last tank of fuel on my Triumph. Sad
Turns out that constant smell of petrol in the garage wasn't the little generator which had previously suffered from a leak, it was the tank connectors on the bike!
Admittedly it's a well known issue on my bike, likewise if there are well known issues on your bike start there (but maybe check the fuel lines too Wink ).
I'll also second getting an ebay voltmeter. Then again I got mine because I want to run heated clothing and replaced the reg/rec regardless - on the triumph it often kills the stator when it goes so I just thought, fck it.

So, checked the FPR and is bone dry...no obvious signs of a leak on any pipe work either and no smells of petrol. Took the air filter out to do the flapper mod. It's pretty dirty, so am guessing it hasn't been done for a while. So also guessing the spark plugs haven't either...worthwhile doing those but can't see that would impact fuel consumption that much?

Any other ideas?

Other than a leak, most other things that will effect economy that much would throw a code.

Another thing to look at, I believe the IAT and the MAP sensor have the same plug and can be accidentally swapped over, which wouldn't do anything good to the bikes fuelling.

Does the bike feel down on power at any point in the rev range?

Are you sure you're running stock gearing?

In comparison to my fz6 it definitely doesn't feel down on power and no particularly horrendous flat spots or losses of power.

Forgot to check the gearing, will go out again this avo and check that. Will also have a look at the plugs and make sure they are the correct way around.
