Hi BCF community,

I just binned my bandit -

Coming out of junction, outside of tires not used much(or is this a problem metzeler tourance tires ? or maybe the 38 psi pressure is too much in this weather?

The tires were warmed by this time. and just slipped from under me. (acceleration was not too high /low) luckily got away with just a bruise on knee and no other injuries.

Apart from that it bled holy WD40. I managed to ride home - about 5 miles (dangerous i know) by which time engine was empty and some oil on tyre - So i put some tyre soap on it. Now its sitting outside.

Injuries to bike= Cracked engine cover (see pics) and slight scuffed fairing , unnoticeable exhaust scratches.

I've just got tyres done and plugs changed etc. so am low on cash, How much should it cost me to replace the engine cover and I need engine oil obviously. Is there likely to be any internal damage?

P.S. There is like a metal / rubber strip around the inside of engine cover which i believe to be a seal, i think that may be knackered too...

Oh and please advice on engine bars and how much they protect in a slide?

Many thanks

It sounds like your tyre pressure is too low,not too high.I'd have thought a bandit would have 42psi rear. There's no need to change pressures depending on the weather.

Bandit 600 should be 33 front and 36 rear.

You'll have to put up some pics of the damage. Might find a used cover on here or banditforum, buy a new gasket from your local dealer, ebay or Robinsons Foundry.

Decent engine bars protect the engine very well and the cost is favourable compared to an engine casing.

I don't know what cover it is you've broken, but can get pattern part covers for £40 for the ignition one, and £52 for the generator cover. Also have got a generator gasket in my toolbox somewhere, yours for a fiver posted if it's the right one?

I also have an oil cooled GSXR750 engine which shares a lot of covers with the Bandit 600 in the basement. Think it's got all the covers left on it and I think they're in pretty good shape too.

Cant see any pictures though so have no idea if any of its useful to you Laughing

i've manages to attach one. quality of pic aint great, had to lower it too attach

Something else will contact hard instead if you fit them - or more likely you'll never drop it again. (sods law)

Obviously they do protect the engine but the damage you describe is not usually serious, make sure no bits are missing inside though as they can block oilways.

Ignition cover. Damage is very slight so new cover and gasket and you're off. So long as you haven't run the engine dry of oil you should be just fine.

So , do you think you have an ignition cover compatible with my bandit. It's a SK1. And how much?

Hi

From Robinsons Foundry (link here the cover is £37.11 and the gasket is £6.58 new.

Although as ZRX61 is hinting, if you have run it out of oil and carried on riding the bike you could easily have wrecked the engine.

All the best

Keith

It's a Bandit so just Liquid Metal the cover and bend the rest back in to shape with a scaff pole.

Also I doubt you've damaged the engine. The sump plug fell out of a mate's CBF600, after a dealer had serviced it, and he rode it 3 miles with zero oil in it. He thought the oil pressure light was just a level warning and hadn't realised all of his engine oil had been sprayed over his rear tyre and half a mile of the M27.

I doubt you could leak 3 litres of oil out of that little crack in that particular cover in 5 miles.

I doubt that myself... I was going very slowly (low revs). There's a line of oil on my drive aswell, so it was still leaking untill i got home, maybe some left still... And I appreciate the liquid metal idea, but you think it'll be ok with the crack around the bolt?

Anyone know where Iain went. Hasn't replied yet about the covers

He and Paddy are probably throwing various motorcycles at the scenery, or as it's 10:30 on a Saturday he may be in the pub.

Chemical Metal will be fine. A tube is less than a fiver, so if it works you're quids in, if not then ehhhhhhhh.

Engine bars undoubtedly saved my diversion from much worse damage in my crash the other month.

Any suggestions on engine bars? Saw some on ebay for about 70 and some for 110.
