Look at the heatmeiser ones. They have wifi ones and the protocol is fairly well documented and code already exists to use them (run it on a raspberryPi)
https://code.google.com/p/heatmiser-wifi/
All the ones you mentioned rely on the company selling them continuing their service. Which means if your internet goes down, no thermostatic control. If their servers die, no thermostatic control, if they go bust... you get the picture... ____________________ Honda CBF125 ➝ NC700X

They're a good idea for those of us who actually have a life and don't always get back/leave the house at a set time
Used a Salus setup before, wasn't wildly impressed. Currently looking at THIS, UK based company and have seen decent comments around the home automation forums. ____________________ I'm immortal. Well, so far. |

A friend of mine has a remotely controlled thermostat in his mountain cottage. His works with a GSM sim card, the only thing to turn the heating on, or regulate the temperature, he needs to send a SMS. It is pretty neat thing to have, as when he decides he wants to go there for a weekend, he can start the heating a day or two before that, so he comes to a warm cottage.
Anyone having the call number of the sim card, can set the thermostat, by the way. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

I bet jayy also snorted at remote central locking for cars...I mean what's the point? Its not like I need the door unlocking Untill I'm stood close enough to use the key! Need to unlock other doors? Then reach across and unlock the passenger door its not hard eh! its not a must have thing but if your used to just having a time programmer like I am then its nice to have a remote thermostat that's able to regulate the room temp....whichever room your in and not just turn the boiler on at x time till y time if its needed or not. The fact its for the same price as a basic programmer is a bonus but not a must have but deffo a money saver ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Once the novelty value of turning your heating on before leaving work to go home has worn off, you're then left with a complicated heating system with weaknesses such as it getting a software bug and you being left with no heating.
Remote central locking has vulnerabilities but you still need the key to get past the immobiliser and start the thing. Keyless cars aren't the most theft proof vehicles right now.
What do you do when your smart house gets a virus, locks you out (or possibly in), gets your fridge to order millions of things you don't want, tells the coffee machine to keep brewing and spewwing out coffee until the house is ankle deep in caffeine, disables the flush on all your toilets, etc etc etc?
Sounds like a lot more fun than just being able to fuck around with someone else's webcam or printer. |

Not if you secure it properly they can't. In the same way that if you lock your door, people can't just walk in and turn on your coffee machine manually. |
You're kidding me, right? If someone wants to come and turn my coffee machine on, they need to break the door / window to gain access. Any piece of kit that's connected to the internet is vulnerable and exploits will be found and will be used. Even more worrying, used remotely by people nowhere near your house.

You'd have lost that bet then, as I post more in this section than anywhere else, it's safe to assume I'm in to tech, specifically web development.
Cars can be hacked now, as they become "smarter". The internet of things is gaining serious momentum and the plethora of devices now connected, it's a security nightmare. As we've seen from some of the most high profile companies who've been hacked recently, some of them can't even store a password in an encrypted format, you really thing your new fridge that orders stock directly when it's low is going to have bank level encryption?
Nevermind finding generic exploits, we've seen stupendously complex malware written specifically to target machines that control industrial level infrastructure and turn it in to melt down mode. How hard is it going to be for people to exploit a fridge, coffee machine, thermostat, etc?
I know my fridge and coffee machine are safe from being hacked, why? Because they aren't connected to the fucking internet. Not only have I got to worry about open source software vunerabilities and zero day exploits on a daily basis, now I have to worry about whether some Asian kid has set my fridge to 48 degrees and cooked all the food in it, whilst making my internet connected oven burn the house down
Let's not forget about the heartbleed bug which we thought SSL/TLS encryption (which protects the internet basically) was keeping us safe, when infact was being exploited and there was no way of knowing if it had. When fundamental things can be exploited / cracked / reverse engineered, you have to question the need of some of these internet connected devices.
You just need to read them links that Ste posted, which is what I was originally getting at. |

The chances of an exploit being discovered are tiny. Despite what you have read, exploits for well developed systems crop up very infrequently. And when one is discovered, so what? The chances that someone will use it to fuck with you are slim to none. Even if they did decide to start on you, all they can do is turn some appliances on, at which point you'll realise somethings up and disable the automation until the vendor fixes it.
You are, literally, more likely to have your heating turned on by a burglar who is chilly than you are to have it turned on by a 'hacker'.
If you dislike the tech, don't trust it, then thats fair enough. But you state "... so can someone else if you can." like anyone could do it if they wanted to, so no, I'm not kidding you. ____________________ Jonathan A wrote: tart. |

I just don't see the point in these. Just another thing to go wrong and waste your time with. Or you'll end up in a constant battle with the mrs because you both keep fucking about with it.
If i get home and i'm abit chilly i put my comfy clothes on, bang the thermostat up by pressing the button a few times ( bang it up to 23, it gets hotter quicker ) and in 10 minutes i'm all good.
The only thing i've done recently to 'update' my house is replace some plug sockets with ones that have usb ports in them. ____________________ 2010 Ducati 848 Dark
