Any advice for a new rider for eliminating rust

I was looking over my bike the other day and I realised there was some very small patches of rust forming. I keep it under a bike cover but it became obvious that I should perhaps learn how to maintain my bike against rust, especially since I park it on the road outside my house.

I really don't know much about this type of thing, feel free to explain like I'm a child what I should do, I'm worried I'm causing damage to my bike through inaction. Any and all advice would be useful.

CBF125?

What you're (probably) seeing is oxidation. You can buy chemical rust "remover" such as Kurust. Whatever you buy, it'll be an acid which strips the oxygen from the metal and chemically transforms it back.

Then you need to stop oxygen reaching the metal again. Any paint or varnish will do that, some are more durable than others. I'm OK with Hammerite.

ACF50 is good for preventing rust.

It will eliminate some rust but you will find that the rust will return. And you can't paint the offending article if you use ACF50 because it contains oil, which is bad for painting.

You are better off using a proper rust treatment and then painting (as RogerBorg said) than using ACF50. ACF is good for what it's really designed for, but it's not a permanant fix.

You aren't giving us much to go on here, I'm afraid.
'Bike going rusty' isn't particularly specific.. Are you trying to tell us the WHOLE thing is going rusty, or just bits of it? If so which bits?
And is it 'Rust' as in ferrouse oxide.. steel bits, or 'corrosion' which is any sort of enviromental breakdown, from white fur on alimunium to yellowing and embrittlement of plastics?

Treatment for rust on painted metal, is very different to treatment for rust on Chrome parts, different again to getting rid of fur on ali...

And there's variouse degrees of 'remidy' depending on how bad it is.

Aluminium footrest hanger, furred; chrome exhaust rusted through and plated over (badly)!

THAT was a 'Rusty' motorbike, and only a couple of pics of how bad it was before renovation, which was a full tear-down job; the frame for example. to get rid of THAT amount of rust, stripped back to bare metal, with heavy duty rotary wire brush, then as you dont see TOO much of it; coat of black smoothrite or four to protect the metal and freshen it up. Other bikes, to get rid of all the rust had to be professionally sand-blasted, and for longer-lasting and more cosmetically 'nice' finish, powder coated.

And as finished; everything renovated and re-finished, and put back together, with bits like the exhaust that were a lost cause, given up on and replaced.

Extreme example, but, gives a clue; if you want to stop a bike from going rusty, you have to strip back, get rid of ALL the rust that's there, so it cant get any worse, then re-finish it to a standard as good or better than it came out the factory.

If its NOT that bad? Or anywhere near? Well? How bad is it? What can you live with? What needs attension?

Some surface rust, like handlebars or exhaust can be polished away with Solvol, to keep it at bay for a few weeks.

Small areas of rust can be spot treated; say on the frame or tank, nibbing back, and over painting locally; but you get a 'mis-match' that can stand out and look as horrible as untreated rust if its in plain sight, though will SLOW the onset of more rust... wont kill it, as what you see s tip of the ice-burg stuff, and rust grows from rust and from insides, like under paint, where you cant see the cankour.

You can use variouse preperations on different bits to keep moisture away; polish, antirust wax like ACF50, car underseal, or on some parts clear aerosol laquer.

BUT its a constant battle, delaying further rust, rarely getting rid of; keeping the bike reasonably 'tidy' whilst in service; and what you do where, is so dependent on so many things! Like how bad it is. How much you can live with. WHAT it is, what its made of, and what it does! I mean, advice to Waxoil is not a great thing to do to a brake disc for example! Putting laquer onto an exhaust that gets hot, tends not to be a great idea either, etc etc etc.

So whats rusty? How bad is it? and how desperate are you to deal with it?

Ok, I've noticed rust on the chain in small spots, also some rust has appeared on the spokes towards the tire side on some spokes.

Various other small spots have appeared around the bike on exposed metal parts such as screws.

I'm worried that, with the colder weather coming, that the salt on the roads might damage my bike.

General maintenance should keep the chain rust free - unless it's a cheap one which tend to rust no matter....... and a similar story with the spokes.........the cheaper type rust no matter what you do. Best thing for the spokes is to have them rebuilt with stainless ones. You could have a go yourself, it's relatively easy, just replace one spoke at a time.
