hey kids,
well i have a bog standard b5.5 2.0l petrol passat estate,
the mrs came home the other day and said it was shuddering,
so i went out and checked it, sure enough,
plugged it in to the pc via the vag.com cable and popped a 16687 fault code which is
Quote:
16687/P0303/000771 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
Possible Causes

Ignition system
Fuel injectors
Fuel pressure
Running out of fuel
EVAP canister purge valve
Evaporative emission system
Low compression
Base engine problems
Controle Module damaged

*so i pulled the plug and changed it to cylinder 1 to see if it was plug related, - nope still cylinder 3,
*tested the resistance of the injector - 14ohm so normal,
*tested to see if the plug was sparking out of the engine
*did a compression test,
cyl 1 = 205psi
cyl 2= 200psi
cyl 3 = 200psi
cyl 4= 198psi
so compression seems all good,
tested that the injector was getting voltage (approx 10v) but was fluctuating because my meter wasn't fast enough to read the pulses any better, was getting the same result on all the cylinders, so ill assume its not wiring to injectors related ,

put plug back in and pulled it out a min or so later, and was wet, so injector is def getting fuel in there, whither its enough fuel is anyones guess, so failing swapping out injectors, any one got any ideas??

tl;dr
cyl 3 not firing, not sure why, give me answers

I am anything but a mechanic, but if you know you have a spark, you're left with air (statistically diminishing unlikely issue) and fuel.

Our (diesel) Passat is on it's second replacement injector at 170k, so for us it's not unheard of.

The old square coil pack with the big heat sink in the middle, i remember those. Can you swap a ht lead round to eliminate a lead? Ive had cars where you can see a spark outside of the cylinder but its not good enough when under pressure.

I would of thought with a split breather hose you would have another code other than misfire. But always worth a spray around the intake i suppose.

yeah i know, nothing makes sense,
i did have another error code that said my maf sensor was reading to high??
both things have said check vacuum lines,
so i guess its plausible, how it effects only the 3rd cylinder is frankly beyond me

Mass air flow high is the kind of code i would expect with an air leak Thumbs Up
I seem to remember fitting some breather hoses to a similar engined passat not long ago that had the engine managment light on, the hoses are not cheap! The intake is quite easy to get off, although i just pulled it back a bit for access.

right i think i cracked it,
i thought since its a wasted spark system, it would fire on both 2 and 3 at the same time,
so swapped lead 2 on to plug 3, and if still was running on 3 cylinders then it was going to be lead related,
if it started running on 2 cylinders then it was not, and was definite issue with cylinder 3 by itself,

what do you know it ran the same, (cylinder 2 was now dead, but cylinder 3 was running fine) also noticed that the metal surround of the lead was sparking on the rocker cover, hmmmm
i pulled the cover off and tried again, and spied this
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/IMAG1154Medium_zps6deb81d5.jpg
you may not be able to see it, but in the center of the plug top there is a pin prick and a spark is escaping and earthing itself, thus taking the easiest way home rather than through the spark plug,

ive wrapped it insulation tape popped it on cylinder 3, started the car,.... ran perfectly
so there you go, f*cken metal surrounded plug ends, dumb sh*t,

mucho thanks, ill keep ya posted on any developments

Glad you got it sorted, if you do replace the leads get a high quality set or even genuine so you wont have to be struggling for a while to change them again.
Try here for genuine stuff https://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/
