I didn't think it was legal to do this... only thing I'll miss when I pass my Mod 2 and go out on my bike is taking my 9 year old golden retriever with me, usually we go hillwalking everywhere, I'll have to sneak out the back door in my leathers... Smile

Why wouldn't this be legal? Cool

Heck as a human you don't need a helmet in the side car.

My mate routinely takes his rottie in a trailer behind the bike or in a sidecar. The dog loves it and freaks people out by staring at them as she goes past.

Common in Italy/Spain to see a dog sitting in the front on a scooter.

My dog wouldn't like it; but even if he did, if I was riding in a manner he found acceptable, I'd prefer to take a car - but then a sidecar is basically the worst of both worlds - I'm presuming you already have access to a car from suggesting you'd 'miss' it.

He didn't see overly impressed with being pillion...

Dog in sidecar is perfectly legal as long as the dog is restrained in such a way that it cannot get out of the sidecar but an ordinary lead or harness is not suitable over long distance ( for the dogs sake) I used to take my Irish wolfhound Huck everywhere with me in the chair, it was a Velorex highback chair with a full high level cover though I kept the bikeside cover flag open due to the heat, the dog loved it.

I am not aware of any actual laws pertaining to the carrying of people in a sidecar either. Be that for provision of any form of restraint, or even a seat. As far as I know, you could go down the road standing on a flatbed sidecar wearing only your underpants while drinking a bottle of whisky and you wouldn't be committing an offence.

Sorry, I could have typed my post a lot better, when I said restraints for the dog I did not mean from a legal standpoint but from the interests of the dogs safety, last thing anyone wants is a dog jumping from a sidecar at any speed, I did not have this problem since my velorex was fully enclosed.

For a dog in a four-wheeler (and to some degree a person), you also have to have them secure as you would cargo.
Believe when I was looking at seatbelt laws for vehicles that don't need them, one issue is that you could possibly get done if one person hit another where they would ideally have been restrained.
