Regulator issue? Honda hornet.

The other day my bike died whilst riding, and then only had enough power to very slowly turn the engine over a few times.

After charging the battery, and getting it to run again, it appears that the bike will run fine until the headlight is put on, then after a few minutes the rev counter will begin to cut out, and then the bike will die and the battery will once again be flat.

Does this sound like a regulator/rectifier issue? Or maybe battery or stator related? I have a spare stator anyway, so that will go on when the new gasket goes on.

Bike is a 1999 hornet 600.

If you have a multimeter you can check if it is charging.
If you check the voltage at the battery I think it should be 13v at 3.5k revs.

As above, check the charging system. Battery should be around 12.5V off load (no engine, lights etc) rising to around 14v when the engine is started and revved to 4-5k. You may also have a stuffed battery as well - it should run for longer than that when it's fully charged and that may be a direct result of a reg/rec failure.

It does seem to be charging, up until the point I turn the headlight on, then it stops charging and goes on to die.

My brother had issues with his reg/rec, bit of a weak spot.

I recently worked on a Hornet 600 with a similar charging problem.Once I had removed the connector to the rectifier/regulator I found the reason for the insufficient charging volts

Once I had cleaned the connectors with WD40 and applied some silicone grease everything works perfectly.

Do yourself a favour and check/replace the reg/rec first. It's more likely to be that that's faulty, it's easy to get to and replace and it'll save you a heap of work replacing the stator which is probably fine.

Well the new Reg/Rec turned up today and the problem has been solved, bike now sits at around 14 volts on idle, the new mottobat battery should be here in a day or so as well. Smile
