 |
|
Hi there!
I'm looking to finish my A2 mod 2 test as soon as possible so will be able to drive up to 400cc or so!
I live in Glasgow, Scotland and am looking for a nice bike hopefully 250cc or so which will be cheap to run, not too expensive to buy, and also not too much on insurance!
I'm considering the following bikes:
CBR 250R
Kawasaki Ninja 250 or Kawasaki Ninja 300
I 100% wanna get a faired bike, it's my dream to drive a sporty-looking bike.
I'm probably looking to buy the bike used, so there may be one or two faults unless I buy it at a higher price at a dealer with warranty. So preferably, a bike where the parts aren't too expensive. Honestly, I'm looking for the cheapest option possible. After 2 years I will definitely be looking to get my full A License, and move up to a 600cc.
Questions(you can copy and paste to answer):
1. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about this?
2. Any bike recommendations?
3. Are the parts cheap?
4. Cheapish Insurance yeah?
5. Is the bike nicely faired?
6. How much does this cost?
What should I expect to pay for it to be
a) Brand New
b) Second hand but only like a year or 2 old
c) 4 years old
d) 6 years old
Thanks!!! |

None of those are likely going to be cheap to insure as theyre all newish desireable bikes - to you and thieves
Why not get something more than a 250-300 and restrict it to be all legal n legit until youre able to ride it unrestricted and enjoy a more powerful bike, as you'll likely want to by that time.
Try thebikeinsurer.com / wickedquotes.com for quotes, varies way too much per person and dependant on details to give an idea how much it will cost you.
Buying from a 'dealer' in no way means it wont have underlying faults or even faults from day 1, warranties are rarely worth the paper theyre written on, especially with used vehicles. Id just buy private and make sure you check what to look out for before you hand any money over. |

You can ride a lot more than that, it just needs to be restricted (or "restricted") down to 35kW and not claim more than 70kW as stock.

I'm so sorry.
The CBR250R had a very brief production run and is shortly being replaced by a 300 version. The Ninja 250 and 300 are mind bogglingly expensive for what they offer.
If you're really in that budget range for a new bike, I'd be looking at the CBR500R, although obviously not from Victor Devine.
The other A2 plastic options are mostly Suzuki:
GS500F
SV650S (with lower fairings)
GSX650F (the Bandit-in-a-frock, NOT the GSX-R600!)

GS500F then. The newest ones are coming up on 7 years old though, and they weren't quality bikes to begin with.
There are some Ninja 250s around, but you'll find that owners ask a lot for them. The Ninja is a nice bike, but at the end of the day it's a 25kW 250 and needs revving to make progress.
SV650S with a restrictor kit (or convincing looking bit of paper) may be your best option. OK, they're also fairly basic, but there are loads of them around at all price ranges and they do look the business with the fairing lowers.
You can only buy used bikes that are actually for sale though, so I'd suggest not making any premature decisions. Get licensed up, get your budget together in case, and scour eBay and Gumtree for bikes. Be patient and swift, get in quick when a good one does come up. Some of the local BCF massive might be up for kicking tyres with you. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

The full faired SV650S, seems to be a good beginner bike, fairly low insurance group, reliable and can be picked up at a decent price. The full faired SV's also have that sporty look about them to.
A Curvy SV650S you could probably pick up for around the £1,500 mark or the Pointy SV for around the £2,500 mark, insurance quotes for me weren't to bad for the SV and i'm also on an A2 license, get some dummy quotes. Put down that you've passed your tests etc when looking for quotes so you have an idea of how much your insurance will be.

There's no need to change bikes when you get your A license, if u buy a bigger bike initially, then you can just take out the restrictors and you've got yourself a more powerful bike and it'll be a bike you're already familiar with. (if u do restrict it that is)

Go about what, buying a bike? Take someone who's got decent knowledge of bikes with u when viewing bikes. Gumtree and ebay i found was best when looking for a used bike. There's also a lot of helpful threads with advice about buying used bikes.

Look at the sports bike section of this thread, it's a list of 'sporty-ish' bikes you can ride on A2 license (most of them need to be restricted on the list), a lot of them are faired and look sporty, especially the 400's. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=3759589
The rest of your questions i'd ask again once you've decided what bike you really want. A lot of people didn't recommend I get a 250 or 300 as they believed i'd get bored of them, but that was advice given to me and tailored around me and for the price of a 250/300 you can buy a decent bigger bike. It may be different in your case if you want good MPG and don't mind sacrificing power then maybe a 250 or 300 is best. |
