Glow plugs, multiple or total failure.

Could be the plugs or the control unit, needs a diagnostic ideally.

I'd check that the glow plugs are getting 12v from cold initially. It's not unknown for the control relay to fail. You can do a resistance check on them - it may only be one or two that have failed although checking current flow is the approved way.

This may help:

To check whether they're getting voltage, use the same as you use for battery checks. Remember they're only active when the engine is cold though. If they aren't getting voltage then check the relay.

To do a resistance check, you'll need to use one of the resistance ranges (ohms) it'll be a very low resistance typically somewhere between 0.1 ohms and, say, 8 ohms. A high resistance indicates a failed plug.

Yep
As above, sounds like glow plugs, thats the most common reason.
Some indirect injection lumps ( like in my van) just wont play unless the glow plugs are AOK.

Just to add to the testing tip
Each one should have a low resistance in the range Islander mentioned but be aware thats each plug on its own
and not connected to any other
so to test each one, you'll need to remove the heavy cable connecting them together.

just in case you dont know.

Most deisels have a yellow light on the dash that glows
when the relay is providing power to the glow plugs.
This shortish period is when you can do the voltage test on the supply cable to check the relay is working

Faulty CTS if plugs check out OK.

Moder diesels rely on them far too much.
