 |
|
Hi All,
I am selling my sym bike . I am not sure how much is reasonable to ask for it .
It is 2012 model and has around 10k .
The brand new costs £1700 , on auto trader there are no 2nd hand ones to sell in 60 miles radius from where I am . however on national level there are some ranging from 1200 upward.
What do you guys think is a reasonable price?
please no comments re it is Chinese cheap etc , it is firstly Taiwanese so better quality made and has 1 year of warranty left on it.
I appreciate your help. Also where should I advertise it ? here and gumtree ? I know autotrader does charge you so not too keen on that option
it is sym xs 125 and here is one on autotrader

You mean the Republic of China?

Better than what? I had an HN125-8 that looked near mint after 3 winters, ran perfectly and sailed through its first MOT with no advisories. It cost £730 OTR including delivery, registration, tax and plates.
What I'm getting at is that you and I know that non-Japanese 125s can be decent, but at the end of the day, most buyers don't, or will have been warned off Chinese tat. That's just the reality of it, if it's not a Honda it might as well be a Hongdou.
tl;dr - you've got nothing to lose by sticking it on Gumtree at an optimistic price, but if you want to get more than £1K for it, you might have to be patient and deal with a lot of fantasists, chancers and mongs. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Well, good luck with that.
I'd suggest that you aim your advert at the type of buyer that you want to attract. Allow genuinely interested buyers to know everything about the bike before they contact you.
Spell and grammar it propur, give lots of details, and good quality pictures including the consumables (tyres, sprockets and chain). I include pictures of the keys and paperwork as well. Why tell what you can show? Put your postcode (or a nearby one) in so that Gumtree can let them know more or less where it is.
For the love of Hannigan, don't bang on about "NO TIME WASTERS!!!" or try to give it bigguns about the strict conditions under which you might possibly consider letting people view your amazing bike with their unworthy eyes. You won't put off the mongs and chancers with that, but you will give nice chaps and chapettes a reason to sigh and look elsewhere.

If they get caught riding it without insurance, then you're also committing an offence. That's not going to happen though. Trust builds trust.
Asking or agreed price in your hand, let them ride it. You're after their money, not their undying friendship, but if you get a bad feeling from a buyer, don't hesitate to call a halt.
Once the deal is done and they're round the corner, cancel your insurance or transfer it to another bike, and block their number/email. Their bike, their problem. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I've always listed cash in hand before ride but if they appear sensible enough I'll waive that. Just adds some of that "seller charm"
But no, slap some L plates on it, chuck on Gumtree for £800, hope a sucker comes along. |

Oh, sure, I ask for cash in hand in the advert, but have given freebie rides to all my buyers, because they were all sensible grown-ups who took the time to give the bike a good going over, asked pertinent questions and were clearly making a buy/no buy decision. I can afford to lose a bike though, OP probably can't.

= a certificate of insurance saying clearly that it covers riding other bikes. Take a picture while they're test riding so you have their details in case a NIP comes through later.
But bearing in mind that potential 125 owners are not likely to have that cover, you may want to be flexible and take a chance. If the bike is on the MID then it's vanishingly unlikely to be an issue.
I love buying bikes, I should add, but selling not so much. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Ignorance is not a defence. It's a strict liability offence. It's RTA 1988 143 1 (b).

Note that there's no mention of "reasonable belief", and that none of the defences that are later allowed for "use" apply to "cause or permit".
Believing that the rider was insured might be mitigation in sentencing, but it's not a defence.
That's the law as it's written, but as I've noted, it doesn't bother me in practice. Worse things happen at sea. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
