Hi All,

I am selling my sym bike . I am not sure how much is reasonable to ask for it .

It is 2012 model and has around 10k .

The brand new costs £1700 , on auto trader there are no 2nd hand ones to sell in 60 miles radius from where I am . however on national level there are some ranging from 1200 upward.

What do you guys think is a reasonable price?

please no comments re it is Chinese cheap etc , it is firstly Taiwanese so better quality made and has 1 year of warranty left on it.

I appreciate your help. Also where should I advertise it ? here and gumtree ? I know autotrader does charge you so not too keen on that option

it is sym xs 125 and here is one on autotrader

from what I've loofor at, been looking at buying one myself, isthey go for between £900 and £1200 for newish ones

Brand spanking new they are only £1500 now.

I'd be very surprised if you managed to clear £1000 for it.

My friend bought a SFM ZZ 125 (basically a Sachs) on a 13 plate, showing just over 1,000 miles on the clock, with a years warranty left for £1,000. The ZZ 125 costs around £1,700 brand new and they're not Chinese either.

The same kid also had a Lexmoto XTRS 125 before hand which he bought that was 3 years old with under 5k on the clock for £600.

I doubt your bikes worth anything over £800/900, if that.

I'd advertise your bike on gumtree, i've always had reasonably quick sales from Gumtree.

Better than what? I had an HN125-8 that looked near mint after 3 winters, ran perfectly and sailed through its first MOT with no advisories. It cost £730 OTR including delivery, registration, tax and plates.

What I'm getting at is that you and I know that non-Japanese 125s can be decent, but at the end of the day, most buyers don't, or will have been warned off Chinese tat. That's just the reality of it, if it's not a Honda it might as well be a Hongdou.

tl;dr - you've got nothing to lose by sticking it on Gumtree at an optimistic price, but if you want to get more than £1K for it, you might have to be patient and deal with a lot of fantasists, chancers and mongs.

£1k is a tidy YBR, list at £800, take offers.

Well, good luck with that.

I'd suggest that you aim your advert at the type of buyer that you want to attract. Allow genuinely interested buyers to know everything about the bike before they contact you.

Spell and grammar it propur, give lots of details, and good quality pictures including the consumables (tyres, sprockets and chain). I include pictures of the keys and paperwork as well. Why tell what you can show? Put your postcode (or a nearby one) in so that Gumtree can let them know more or less where it is.

For the love of Hannigan, don't bang on about "NO TIME WASTERS!!!" or try to give it bigguns about the strict conditions under which you might possibly consider letting people view your amazing bike with their unworthy eyes. You won't put off the mongs and chancers with that, but you will give nice chaps and chapettes a reason to sigh and look elsewhere.

If they get caught riding it without insurance, then you're also committing an offence. That's not going to happen though. Trust builds trust.

Asking or agreed price in your hand, let them ride it. You're after their money, not their undying friendship, but if you get a bad feeling from a buyer, don't hesitate to call a halt.

Once the deal is done and they're round the corner, cancel your insurance or transfer it to another bike, and block their number/email. Their bike, their problem. Wink

This is standard conditions of pre-sale. You leave me the full asking price and you can test ride it. If you bin it, you bought it. If you bring it back safely but don't want it you can have your money back.

You need to see evidence of appropriate insurance cover before they ride it.

What roger is on about is leave them test ride it if you have the asking price or agreed price of cash in your hand, under the understanding if the bend it or just disappear then you keep the cash.
If they however come back from the test ride and don't want it, you give the money back.

I've always listed cash in hand before ride but if they appear sensible enough I'll waive that. Just adds some of that "seller charm" Laughing

But no, slap some L plates on it, chuck on Gumtree for £800, hope a sucker comes along.

Oh, sure, I ask for cash in hand in the advert, but have given freebie rides to all my buyers, because they were all sensible grown-ups who took the time to give the bike a good going over, asked pertinent questions and were clearly making a buy/no buy decision. I can afford to lose a bike though, OP probably can't.

weasley wrote:

= a certificate of insurance saying clearly that it covers riding other bikes. Take a picture while they're test riding so you have their details in case a NIP comes through later.

But bearing in mind that potential 125 owners are not likely to have that cover, you may want to be flexible and take a chance. If the bike is on the MID then it's vanishingly unlikely to be an issue.

I love buying bikes, I should add, but selling not so much. Very Happy

thanks very much ,

why would I get in trouble if they take my bike and they have no insurance .
Obviously I don't let that happen but just asking as I am curious

is it because i am comitting an offence by letting them illegaly ride my bike

Yes, it is an offence to knowingly let someone that is not insured to ride your vehicle.

That said, I am fairly flexible as a person if someone is in a bind and wants to ride a bike of mine.

Ignorance is not a defence. It's a strict liability offence. It's RTA 1988 143 1 (b).

Note that there's no mention of "reasonable belief", and that none of the defences that are later allowed for "use" apply to "cause or permit".

Believing that the rider was insured might be mitigation in sentencing, but it's not a defence.

That's the law as it's written, but as I've noted, it doesn't bother me in practice. Worse things happen at sea.

Personally, i never let anyone test ride vehicles. I offer to let them watch/follow me riding it up and down the road/listen to the engine etc, but if they want a test ride it without insurance, and with little to cover my ass if they bin it, they can go elsewhere.

Private sales aren't a dealership - you get a cheaper bike, but that means you don't get all the benefits you would elsewhere.

For advertising biketrader and mcn classifieds have been good for me in the past - although they both charge and for an already cheap bike like yours its probably not worth the money - and may not even have many of the likely buyers you'd be after.

Gumtree/ebay is probably your best bet. More pics and information the more responses you will get.
