How About BCF Tool Hire?

'Seems there's quite a few people out there, esp those new to biking that lack some of the more specialist tools to work on their own bikes. As a result, some end up falling prey to unsrupulous garages.
So, how about a BCF, (essentially free), tool hire for some of these tools, like torque wrenches, chain tools, extractors, pullers etc, etc?
Maybe it could work by the user, perhaps a BCF member of a certain length of time, leaving a £10 or £20 fully returnable deposit and full "naming and shaming" for anyone abusing the system?

I wouldn't mind running it, just looking for opinions.

Aye, there's bound to be tools getting wrecked and other costs so maybe a £1 subscription on top..... or similar?? Maybe there could be a nominal fee to cover breakages?

It wouldn't really work, but I'd always list up if the user is in Maidstone or similar, they are welcome to come use tools.

I wouldn't loan tools worth £50+ for a £10 or £20 deposit, and my rules of break it and buy it apply only to trusted friends, others can borrow if they give me cash to the value of the tool till it gets returned in the condition I gave them it.

It'd probably make more sense having a list of mechanically-competent people by area, so users can book each other for help, as opposed to loaning tools.

Like fuck am I loaning out tools.

Loaned my dremel to a BCF'er in 2011? 2012 to do a stubby can on his GSXR and never recived it back - however as he's moving house it may surface

Loaned my box to a mate while he was doing engine swaps on his car, drove past and caught him cracking wheel nuts by stamping on my 3/8 drive ratchet.

He left my 1/4 drive socket set outside for a week in the rain.

He lost 90% of my screwdrivers.

I then at great cost to myself replaced them all, and feeling that people were worthy of a second chance loaned my box out to someone else.

Ratchet screwdriver bits all lots, all my impact driver bits mashed from using flathead bits to try and get an allen key bolt out. spanners all scratched to fuck from being kicked round the driveway, both socket sets left out in the rain while he worked on the car, then shut away for a week in the box without drying them. Allen key drivers all came back with twisted handles.

Recently, my bolt croppers, angle grinder, and large hacksaw have all gone missing.

All in, we're talking about £750ish of damage/loss within the space of four years.

Never, ever ever again unless I am present the whole time and I know the person well. Even then I'd be a bit funny about it, my box is stored at work now, kept locked up and is only ever used by me on my own bikes on my day off.

With that said, I have absolutely no objections whatsoever to working on anyones bike totally FOC & helping people out wherever possible. People on here have offered to bail me out in the past (Pete for example offering to sort my cylinder head) so I've no issues with doing basic stuff to help someone else out of the shit, despite the other halfs protests that her nephews christening is more important than cleaning out someones YBR rear brake drum

Like most people here, I've not had much luck lending my tools out to people and receiving them back in the condition I lent them, or back at all.

However, if someone was to come to mine to use them I'd be OK with that.

I wouldn't want to send out tools, post office breaking them in transit or losing them but would always offer someone to ride to mine to use them, I'd probably even offer a coffee.

That way, the person gets to use my tools and gets a free drink!

And it'd give me a chance to have a mechanical look at other bikes too.

I personally would be inclined to go round and help ''People I like'' on this forum whom seem trust worthy.


Could I say no to some and yes to others? Would probably cause more arguments than it will solve.

Seeing as I haven't met most people on this forum, again I'd rather go and help than lend my tools to someone who may break/lose or cause hassle with it all.


I like the current system, someone posts up a problem in the workshop and hopefully someone will offer their services.

I wasn't really talking about individuals lending out their own tools...Jeez, I wouldn't even lend my own son my tools....more to get a good collection together, by whatever means possible, and loaning them. Like a "tool bank".

I don't mind donating either tools or some cash towards buying them.

What tools would you suggest? I bet there's no more than 20 that are used regularly enough to warrant a place in the tool bank.

I'm old enough now to have most things but can remember when I started riding bikes having to fix bikes with an old screwdriver of my Grandads, a couple of whitworth spanners which I would pack with strips of metal to try and use and a set of pipe grips. It's a pain and you end up damaging more than you repair.
