Everything in a bike you never wanted, or something.

Concept. How are they planning on getting drive to the front wheel? Doesn't look like the concept has anything in place for that?

Electric motor apparently.

It seems as though its being marketed as a rugged off roader. If your going to make an AWD off roader, why on earth would you make a scooter? It has got to be literally the worst type of bike to use for it surely...

EDIT: Maybe a cruiser would be worse due to clearance issues.

Fair, doesn't appear to be an electric motor in the wheel, as it's too small to house one and there's no obvious other drive connections. Looks like standard forks and that to me. Confused

Then motor could be housed in the top of the forks and a telescopic driveshaft implanted in one of the stanchions providing drive Thinking

Sounds like witchcraft to me.

Is that not full of bits that make the forks work? Thinking

You go for a scooter style if it's trying to replace a quad for hopping around a farm. But the wheels don't look appropriate for the type of use that deserves the two wheel drive.

There's no evidence of an electric motor there.

I've wanted to make an AWD hybrid with an electric front motor for a while. First off, it can allow you to use it as a plug-in hybrid 0 emissions/cheap to run vehicle for short journeys.

Then there's that it may be simpler and possibly lighter to do than moving the mechanical energy over.
I was thinking maybe the motor mounted on the top of the forks using a telescoping shaft so that it's not adding to unsprung weight and is out of most water.
But for a 'runaround' bike more focused on utlitiy, a hub motor should be fine.

I reckon a fat-tyre bike like my Koala would be ideal for this, as the AWD would be particulary useful getting up snowy slopes and the like.

From the article

Quote:
The scooter's rear wheel is powered by a 150cc turbodiesel engine, while the front wheel spins on an electric motor—that's right, it's an all-wheel-drive hybrid. The diesel engine doubles as an electric generator for camping or off-the-grid work sites, and the LED headlight detaches to become a flashlight. And with package shelves in front of the handlebars, behind the seat, and on either side of the rear wheel, the RNT promises to carry more cargo than any two-wheeler has a right to.

Think of all those countries in Asia, South America and eastern Europe where almost all rural roads are dirt, grit or in disrepair. How many people out there do you see riding motocross type bikes? They all tend to be CG, C90 or scooter style bikes. For those kinds of countries, having a high MPG bike with all wheel drive is probably very marketable.

Not to mention being able to fit a small family, the dog and a quarter ton of grain on the bench seat and front.

For the UK it probably isn't as useful as you have good tarmacked roads and higher speed limits.

- from the article "Anyway, it's probably not coming to the U.S. We generally like our bikes big, fast, and stylish..."

shouldn't that be "Anyway, it's probably not coming to the U.S. We generally like our bikes fat, slow, ugly and something that if we try to take a corner at anything over 3 mph we end up buried in a ditch, dug out and then re-buried in a graveyard somewhere just to make sure"

You'll find plenty of ADV type riders on scooters in the desert, and other difficult terrain.

Just look at all the RTW C90s

they missed a trick, by not putting a shaft drive on it..but using chain instead..
and if you look at the front disk looks like abs sensors - or possibly teeth for the drive from the leccy motor!!!!

Why's that?
Did you think it was overly light and a bit too simple? Razz

Unless it's powered by the world's smallest electric motor, it's not on the front wheel its self, and the forks look like standard items, so can't see how they're transmitting drive.

Maybe they didn't include the design for the front wheel drive at the concept stage in case another company pinched it.

Or any of the other actual 'technology'.
On the electric generation stuff, I've also looked into this and wondered about some of the options.
Definitely wondering about a 24/48v alternator on a water cooled 125cc petrol engine (maybe CBR125 or similar as it's watercooled.) Then the option of a decent battery bank and a chunky inverter.

Either use it to charge batteries/provide power, or if you already have power, use it as a plug in hybrid from the big battery.

Off-road scooters have been done before. Tote Gotes were made in the 70's, although they don't look very refined.

So far, AWD m'cycles are supposed to be great for offroading/MX and also allow faster speeds on wet racetracks, but currently don't make enough difference in the dry to justify the extra weight when used on sportbikes.

The answer is SIMPLES...

The bike is designed to be run in area's where garages are not in great supply.
A broken chain can be fixed with some wire....
What you going to do when the shaft drives stops working?

Bikes like this are designed around the KISS principle Thumbs Up

Hasn't taken off for motocross.
No one's winning stuff with Christini particularly, but does seem to interesting for us less talented for steep slopes and nasty stuff.
Definitely like to have a play on one.

2wheel drive has been done plenty of times before, here's one of the better ones I have seen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neyqXj-txFA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TrvXwoGKKU

it uses a hydraulic pump driven from the outputshaft, and a hydraulic motor on the front wheel.
