Anyone have/had one of these? What are they like? Servicing, problems, etc
Kind of half considering chopping in my Streetfighter for one. Probably try and get a test ride somewhere.
The thing that attracts me is that people say its a mix of Il4 and V Twin. Oh and the noise ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

Don't get the one with the pink frame.
From memory, they're pretty solid to be honest. No real horror stories yet. Make sure the one you buy is not a ex-racer/been thrown up the road. ____________________ My Flickr |

Yeah I definitely don't want that colour scheme ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

There have been reports of the clutch becoming grabby (have a look in the forum UrbanRacer linked to) but that can be solved easily by rebuilding the clutch using the same components as the '08 version.
I got one last May. I don't really have anything to compare it to other than the R6 I owned previously, so I'm probably not going to be much help, but I really like it. It's quite a big bike, and I'm 6'2", so it's far less cramped than the R6. It's also much easier to get on with: it rides and handles really well, and the oddball engine is very flexible (and sounds great). I can't tell you if it's like a v-twin, though, because I've only ever had singles and IL4's.
It gets a big from me. |

It's very easy to deal with at low speeds. I always felt like I was fighting the R6 in really tight turns; no problems with the R1. The drive modes are useful too: if you're needing to crawl then mode B slows down the throttle response over the first third of the turn (the modes don't cut the power like other bikes with similar systems, they just change the throttle response) so the bike is really tractable. Mode A is just the opposite: make sure you've got plenty of room because it really is abrupt! Standard mode is pretty much what you'd expect.
Best thing to do is see if you can blag a ride on one. I got to try one out when the dealer had a demonstrator: he got it back with 120 miles extra on the clock (and a huge grin on my face). |

No idea on the 09, my biggest regret is getting rid of my 2001 R1. Managed to get over 50mpg on the motorway and hit the fastest speed I've ever done on it. Such a machine, if love to try a newer one.
Take that as you will |

I can't view more than one post unless I register Thanks anyway!
woo thanks for the tip. Seems nearly all new bikes need mapping out of the factory. Same thing with my SF
I see everyone mentions it's a bigger bike, what's it like for someone around 5'9? My SF is just right. I know I will answer this when I go and see one but I'll ask anyway ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

Yes you need to register to be able to see more than the first post, you should register though it's a great forum community too.
Yes most new bikes need remapping, the factory's put pretty lame maps in so bikes can pass emissions & noise controls plus the safety brigade that a flash can do astonishing things to bikes.
I am 5ft 10 and the R1 14B fits perfectly, not cramped at all (in fact very roomy) and no problem touching feet down.
The 14B over on the yamahar.co.uk website is like marmite you either love it or hate it. I hated mine until I got a flash-tune kit even started test riding other bikes (1000rr, RSV, GSXR1000)
For me the OEM settings for the throttle were terrible, very on/off which made it a pain to ride slowely or around town, next was the engine breking, it was very strong and I found it very unsettling transitioning from straights to corners, not at all confidence inspiring. Once I got my flash-tune cable and started playing with it though the bike was astonishing, then I created a custom map on a dyno using flash-tune and well the bike was sorted. I now run www.VeloxRacing.com and we are the European distributor for flash-tune, we now cover most 06 onweards Denso based sportsbike ECU's (R6/R1/GSXR/ZX6/VMAX/BUSA/ER300/XT1200) and offer the kits for fitting to your own bike or a mail in flash-tune service where we flash your ECU for you.
Back to the 14B, the main things to look for are rattle on startup which will be cam chain tensioner, cheap fix and one that Yamaha may do free, clutch again wasn't a recall as such but was a known issue and Yamaha do sometimes replace them, I have not had either issue with my 2009 model. There were two recalls both relating to headlights, one where the headlight lenses melted the plastic on the front of the bike when the sun went through it (like a magnifying glass) the second is recent and relates to the wiring behind the lights.
Never heard about any owners having problems with valves etc (from what I have heard the engine is bulletproof) it can get warm between your legs as that is where the catalytic converter is, a decat pipe will sort that out though, and free up around 5bhp, you will need to adjust the fueling with a PCV or Flash-Tune though as the bike will be running leaner.
Anyway, hope you guys find that useful.
Mike
P.S. here is a pic of my pride and joy

Waiting for the 14 demo bike to come back then I can take it out and compare it to the 09 I rode.
Very interested in what traction control does on a bike, have never ridden one with all that fancy shit on.
I hate all the faffing about between bikes and all the messing around you've got to do but hopefully get sorted in the next week or so.
Really don't like the standard cans but they would be going and replace with a set of Toce Brothers |

Took a 14 model out today for a test ride... unreal. Love the power delivery on it, smooth as fuck!
Cans are a bit on the quiet/tinny side but they're getting replaced anyway. Had a little play with the traction control settings too, quite cool if I'm honest.
Should have mine next weekend, currently bikeless, as I sold mine yesterday |
