What would be a ball park figure for self building a pc capable of editing 1080p video.

Thats cost of the box and operating system. Not including keyboard monitor mouse.

Also would it be worth building my own or should I just get one built online?

I spent 1200 on an all singing and dancing one about 1.5 years ago. Though any decent spec quad core could do it. My older Q6600 did fine with stuff.

About 5 - 600 quid
you need a good processor and a decent amount of memory about 8gb or above depending on the OS

decent graphics card and large HD or better an SD

I edit HDMI and also multitrack record on an AMD core 6 with 8gb un windows 7 Ultimate with no issues

You'll be able to do it for that price just slow as fuck.

A decent HDD is 85 quid, and any processor worth buying will be 100 quid plus.

Agreed £300 will get you a machine that will work but slower than a week in the jail

AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core Processor £130
8gd memory will run you about £70
motherboard £80 - 120 depending on what you go for
2tb hard drive (you will need the space) £80 - 100
Graphic card is another £70 +
add in your case and PSU and other bits & bob's

AMD Sick Not a good plan for video editing!!

For £300 I'd say buy something off the shelf or build your own using second hand parts.

I've recently 'upgraded' my 5Ghz i7 six core with hyperthreading to a £30 2.7Ghz dual core and it's painfully slow if I ask it to do anything. Laughing

Why not? that's what the fake cores where good at when it was released (bulldozer or whatever) unless i've been misinformed as per usual?

I'm currently running an AMD 6 core with no issues for video / audio editing
in fact most of the time it doesn't give me any lag and I regularly do very large files and video's of over an hour

Having had a Bulldozer, its performance was about what you could expect for a quad core (which is what it is), wasn't impressed with it so sent it back quite quickly.

A 6 core AMD might not lag but I'd expect better results from a quad core Intel. Plus there are quite a lot of 6 core AMD CPUs to choose from, some are worse than others.

i7 processor
Asus Mobo
8GB+ of high speed RAM ideally.
SSD is a must
GFX card doesn't have to be anything crazy good for video editing.

Use those and you will make something reasonable but not for £300. The processor will cost over £200 most likely.

I have the 4ghz 8 core thing. Laughing

If you're editing video you will want 2 storage mediums, one SSD the other HDD (as the scratch disk)

I suspect you will struggle for £300 to find a decent machine

what software are you using??

does it do more than 4 threads - most likely not - software engineers havent cought up with core counts yet.

i would be looking at software before pulling the trigger on any hardware. HDD asides, there is no point spening £300 on a 8 core CPU able to run 16 thread at 2.7 GHZ if the software will only run 2 threads. if that were the case you may well be better off spending £80 on a good dual core and decent mother board and clocking it to within an inch of its life. it will be cheaper to clock the dual core as it will take less cooling, less power demands on the mobo and PSU

i would also use more RAM, alot more RAM, then look into ram disk, it will speed things up a treat. as an idea some will allow upto 8.5GB/s through put where sata will only maybe get to 3GB/s read on a good day (although sata 3 is rated for upto 6GB/s) with a heavy duty raid controller. last time a saw it took something like 20 SSDs to reach 2GB/s.

you need to be looking at way more than the adviced 8GB for RAM, i have had 8gig for nearly 8 years now, and with the increased amount of image editing i am doing now am finding that 8gig is getting close when loading 100+ 24mp raw images when batch editing and 200 shot focus stack, while doing all the other normal stuff you do while waiting for things to happening (you know checking email, playing half life 2 for the 10 mins)

it not how much you have to spend, its about spending it the right place depening on your application

I sometimes use Nero Recode, it uses all my cores.
Handbrake is also pretty decent as it will use the cuda cores on my gfx card.

so nothing too demanding then.

and as cansa has mentioned, look into things that use cuda or openCL.

dunno about nvida side but open CL card can be had for less than £30
