stop at the scene of an accident?

I was riding to Runcorn the other night when I spotted a Focus up on the grass verge and debris all over the road.
I pulled over and ran to the car to see if the driver was ok.

Fortunately the woman was fine. Turns out she had clipped the kerb, panicked and mounted the verge on the opposite side.

She said I was the only person who stopped and that recovery was on the way.

What type of person wouldn't stop and offer some kind of help?

A bellend is the simple answer.

You should always stop and ask if any help is needed at least. Unless its obvious that your help isn't needed such as lots of other people on the scene etc.
If you witness an accident happen you should always stop.

Saw a car piled into the central reservation of the motorway a few weeks back, it was dark and had no lights so I barely avoided it myself. It would have taken me a long time to react, slow down, pull over to the hard shoulder, run back probably half a KM, run across 4 lanes of motorway, and would have probably got me killed. I didn't stop. The motorway is massively covered with CCTV and help I'm sure would have been on the way.

Stopped after every accident I've witnessed. Would do it for anyone as it's more about being human than an "us vs them" attitude.

Once I didn't stop for a minor 50/50, I deemed they were both idiots so decided to let them sort it out themselves.

Every other time I have stopped to offer to be a witness to the innocent party... I also like to have a damn good nosy at the damage.

I stopped for an accident where the firemen has to cut the car to get the passenger out. Bad situation.

However when I had my accident nobody bothered to help. Did it piss me off, YES.

Has it changed my approach, not really. Somebody could be hurt. I always stop to check. It is the decent thing to do. Plus you never know how karma is going to bite you back.

I've seen a couple of post-accident wrecks by the side of the road and turned around to go back to see if anyone was hurt. One was a bike lying on the outside of a corner by a hedge... I went back to check there was no rider in the hedge. The other was a car that had rolled into the middle of a field and had just the interior light showing. I was one of several cars that spontaneously stopped and searched the field for casualties (it was pitch black).

This is in addition to stopping for every accident I have witnessed, regardless of whoever else did or didn't stop or whatever vehicle type it was.

What kind of self-important, judgemental arse wipe wouldn't stop?

Not an accident but a guy was flagging down cars outside my village late at night. Because it was dark and he had a foreign accent no one was interested in helping him (he'd tried turning his van round in a small off road area and got bogged down in mud).

After about half an hour I managed to get him towed out and on his way again.

I'd like to think someone would help me out in a similar situation but it seems that helping others is becoming a thing of the past.

Only seen one proper accident, in a busy main road, all the cars had stopped as they couldn't get past as this guys TL1000R was laid across the road with a van the other side.


I was on my bike, got off, check the guy was ok, he was, next priority is the mans pride and joy, went to go pick it up, the van driver then comes over to help me pick it up while panicking and pleading to me like a Judge about how this guy crashed into him and not the other way round. Once they were all sorted I left.

Simply could not leave someone on their own however and would need to stop even if it is just to pick up their bike or offer my mobile. I'd like to think others would do the same.

Tl;dr yeah I would help.

Luckily never seen or been witness to an accident, I've come off a few times (on roundabouts) and had bikes brake down a few times at the side of the road. One of them times was on a nice sunny day, must have seen over 50 bikes that day with numerous cars (A34 Trentham - Stafford ) not one stopped or did the thumb up or down.

Meh I'd still help though in the future can't base past experience on a single individual or specific group. Just stopping even if you can't help might be good enough. Their phone could of gone flat and could be stranded for hours.

I once refused to help.

Few years back I spent half an hour digging a Nissan 350z out of a snowdrift. Drivers door was jammed and trying to get out of the passenger side would've been extremely difficult. The driver had stupidly decided to tackle a particularly icy, snow-covered slope just outside my house and spun out of control.

Feeling chuffed at my act of humanity, I swung my shovel over my shoulder and went back inside my house for a cup of tea. As I did so, out of the corner of my eye I saw the same 350z trying to drive back up the impossible icy slope, spin and slide back to exactly where I'd dug him out. I didn't return to help.

Otherwise, I was on my back having been hit head on (on my bike) and a police car drove past without stopping. That's London for you.

yeah i always stop as i woudl like to think others would stop for me...

although last year i was on my way to the Scotch Piper when i got a flat on my CG i pull over an wait at a bus stop for international rescue (my mrs with a compresser)

about 50 bikes went past - all seperately

out of all of em about 3 asked if i was ok.....
